Frequently Asked Questions Related to Sns Sacral Nerve Stimulation

Before the Procedure (5 Questions):

Sacral nerve stimulation delivers a gentle electrical impulse through a probe which is being placed near the sacral nerve. The technique of pacemaker is just like heart beat of person which stimulates the bowel, sphincter and the bladder muscles to function normally.

The success rate of SNS is around 92% in the patients having permanent implantation.

Sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence is a less invasive surgical option for treating faecal incontinence and constipation. Sacral nerve stimulation is a direct low-voltage stimulation of sacral nerve root and it has become first line of treatment in patient whose conservative treatment have failed.

When a device is surgically implanted in the buttock region it will direct the sacral nerve for delivering the electric stimulation to nerves and then to the bowel and bladder region.

Sacral nerve stimulation is not painful but it has got some risks such as swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection and mild pain. You should always ask with the doctor about the steps to minimize them.

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

The complete procedure will not take longer than 45 minutes to complete under local anaesthesia.

In order to stimulate a sacral nerve a thin temporary wire is being inserted near the sacral nerves in the lower back which controls the bladder and bowel movement, the wire is then connected to small device which delivers the stimulation to the nerves.

A neurotransmitter device, implanted under the skin in the upper buttock area, transmits mild electrical impulses through a lead wire close to the sacral nerve. The impulses, in turn, influence the bladder sphincter and pelvic floor muscles providing bladder control.

Post the Procedure (7 Questions):

After your surgery you have to wait for minimum 3 to 6 weeks before you can start your normal activity. You have to wait till your incision is being healed completely.

The benefit of sacral nerve stimulation therapy is that it can reduce or eliminate the problem of bladder control especially if you have to go for frequent urination.  This is also a type of treatment which can be completely reversed and discontinued anytime without causing any damage to nerves.

Main risk of the procedure include pain at the site of implant placement, technical problems, undesirable stimulations and sensation which are not common and they can be resolved.

Usually after the surgery the incision area may feel sore or painful for few weeks which will gradually reduces as you start healing.  When your symptoms is controlled you can go back to your doctor for check up.

In the first 3 to 6 weeks after your surgery you have to reduce your activities till the incisions are healed completely.

The old devices have a battery life of around 4 to 6 years and the new rechargeable device will last for around 15 years or more than it.  The battery life will fluctuate according to the strength of the signal.  When there is time for the battery to be replaced the entire neurotransmitter will be replaced with a new device.

Old models have metal in the lead which are not included in MRI but the new technologies are being made with MRI compatible device. These patients should not undergo Diathermy, you should consult with your doctor before you are undergoing any other treatment.
