Revision hip replacement surgery is recommended when the previous replacement surgery cause issues due to a loose implant or infection. Your doctor will do some tests to evaluate the condition of the hip, such as X-rays, MRI scans, and CT scans. Your doctor will also do blood tests to determine if you have any infection or have a reaction to the metal component. All these tests are covered in the package.
Medicines consumed by the patient when they are hospitalized are covered in the package. Any medicines bought from outside the hospital are not included in the package.
Generally, there are five different types of implants for the surgery such as ceramic-on-ceramic, metal-on-metal, ceramic-on-polyethylene, metal-on-polyethylene, and ceramic-on-metal. Metal-on-polyethylene is the most commonly used hip replacement implant that stays firmly attached.
You need to stay in the hospital for about 5 - 6 days. The recovery is slower after revision than recovery after primary hip replacement surgery. Stitches and staples will be removed several weeks after the surgery. A follow-up appointment is scheduled six weeks after the surgery to check your healing and recovery and then continue three months and annually after the surgery.
The risk of infection is higher after revision surgery. That’s why you will be given antibiotics. You will also take NSAIDs for some time to manage pain after the surgery. Regular physical therapy is beneficial for increasing your strength. Depending on the severity of the infection, more than one revision hip replacement may be required. It is not covered in the package.
Most health insurance plans offer coverage for revision hip replacement surgery. It usually covers costs for pre-surgery appointments, lab tests, hip implant costs, post-surgical hospitalization, and physical therapy.
You can also go for subchondroplasty, which promotes natural bone growth to repair damaged hips. Physical therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs can be used for better results.
