Enucleation is the surgery done to treat retinoblastoma and it is the safest way to remove retinoblastoma. Your doctor will conduct a retinal examination and take MRI scans, CT or CAT scans, and ultrasound imaging as well. The package typically includes the cost of the tests.
The drugs used at the time of chemotherapy to help reduce the tumor include vincristine (Oncovin), etoposide (Toposar), and carboplatin (Paraplatin). The medicine cost is generally included in the package when the patient is in the hospital. On the other hand, if the patient buys medicines outside the hospital, they are not included in the package.
The main types of treatment for retinoblastoma are radiation therapy, surgery (enucleation), and laser therapy (photocoagulation). Thus your stay at the hospital depends on the type of treatment you pursue. If chemotherapy is employed, it takes about 6 months to shrink the tumor.
Retinoblastoma is the most common eye cancer tumor in children, and typical complications of it include tumor recurrence, metastasis, and trilateral retinoblastoma. Thus it is crucial to make follow-up appointments with your doctor and get MRI scans or CT scans to check for concerns post the treatment. Any correction surgery or medicines (oral or topical) will be an additional cost.
Insurance policies generally cover surgical eye procedures, but for other treatments such as chemotherapy, they may only cover a partial amount. Please communicate with your insurance provider to know the exact details of your policy.
Alternative treatments include external-beam radiation therapy or plaque radiotherapy, cryotherapy, thermotherapy, systemic or ophthalmic artery infusion chemotherapy. All the therapies are comparatively cheaper than surgery (enucleation). Please talk to your doctor to know the most suitable treatment plan for you.
