Percutaneous transluminal is a procedure which is being used for opening a blocked blood vessels by using a small flexible plastic tube or a catheter which has a balloon at its end.  When the tube is being placed in inflates and open the blood vessels so that normal flow of blood is being restored.

PTCA is done if you have persistent chest pain and blockage of only one or two coronary artery. This procedure will allow opening up of the blocked coronary artery and allow blood to circulate to heart muscle.

The most serious complication of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is abrupt closure of the dilated coronary artery within the first few hours after the procedure.

Narrowing of the arteries, blood clots, bleeding are the common side of the procedure. Some of the rare side effects of the procedure includes kidney problems, stroke or abnormal heart rhythm.

After the surgery you will be taken to the recovery room. You have to lie flat on your back with the head of the bed tilted.  You have to stay in bed for 24 hours after surgery.
