At the time of surgery the surgeon moves your knee cap to the side and the other cuts a small amount of bone. At last the damaged tissues are being replaced with new metal and plastic components. These components combine to  form an artificial joint.

In  bilateral knee replacement surgery first the doctor will make an incision in the knee area and then resurface the knee joint with prosthesis which is being made up of a metal or a plastic. Most common type of prosthesis being used for knee replacement are cemented prosthesis and placing the incision will be closed with stitches or surgical staples and a drain will be placed at the incision site for removing the fluid and a sterile bandage or a dressing will be placed.

Patient is independent and ambulant within 4-5 days of surgery. Within 24 hours of surgery the patient is made to stand.

Person can start community walking within 2 weeks and can climb the stairs after 4-5 days and driving after 4-6 weeks.

It is not mandatory but if the patient is willing for physiotherapy He/She can take it for 2-3 weeks post surgery. The physiotherapy is provided to patient during hospitalization and patient learns the exercises to be done post discharge.

All implants are MRI compatible. An implant card is given to the patient that can be shown at airport check.

It is recommended after 6 weeks.

You will be discharged from the hospital 2-3 days after the surgery.

You will definitely have some pain after the surgery but your team will make sure that you should have minimum pain. You will be given pain medications for managing your pain

After recovery from the surgery your knees will be less painful than it was before. There will be a bandage placed over your knee and you will have to drain it to remove fluid from the joint. If urinary catheter is being placed then  doctor will remove it next day after the surgery.

You need to wear compression garment or a bandage around your knees to improve the blood circulation. After surgery a physiotherapist will help you to bend straight and strengthen your knees and to walk with your new knees. Once you return home your therapy will continue for few weeks a after the surgery

Most people are able to recover within 3 months of the surgery even though it may take upto 5 months or more.

People who have got bilateral knee replacement will be recovered within a week and they can return back to their normal work within four to six weeks after surgery.

The recovery after bilateral knee replacement is usually 13 weeks, after 13 weeks you are ready to resume your normal activities.

Some people have some difficulty in kneeling after bilateral knee replacement but if you are uncomfortable you should avoid kneeling.

The risks associated with both simultaneous and staged bilateral knee replacement surgeries include infection, blood clots, heart attack, stroke, nerve damage, failure of the artificial joint, potential necessity for blood transfusion. People over age 65 are more likely to experience complications from double knee replacement surgery. Men are also at a greater risk for complications than women.

Double knee replacement surgery recovery will take minimum 13 weeks and after three weeks you will be ready to resume your regular activities.

Depending on the type of surgery you have undergone you may need to use an assistive device for few weeks during your recovery, these devices will help you in performing some activities such as walking, using restroom and dressing room.

After your double knee replacement surgery you should avoid sitting on stools, sofas, rocking chair or any other chair which are too low. When you are getting up from chair use the arm of chair, walker or crutches to for getting up.

It will take about three weeks after surgery when you will be able to walk. Your physiotherapist will tell you to do some will tell you if you need to add more exercise to your daily life. Almost an year is needed for everything to get settle and to get strength in knees so that you can easily perform all activities.
