Cataract surgery is being done to remove the lens of your eyes and then replace with an artificial lens. In Cataract the eye lens becomes cloudy which affects the vision.

If you have cataract it doesn’t mean that you always need surgery, you may not even notice the change in your vision. As the cataract grows they can cause some more symptoms, you may notice some blurr vision, you may have some double vision when you looks straight. You will have problem in reasing or working on computer. Cataracts can make you more sensitive to glare from the sun. You might see a halo around bright lights.

Cataract surgery is not a difficult surgery, it is very quick and painless surgery. This is an outpatient procedure and you are expected to get free within an hour.  You will not receive any sort of pain during the procedure.

Cataract surgery is not painful mostly patient remain awake during the surgery, you will have little or no discomfort during the surgery. Before starting the surgery you will be given mild sedative which relaxes the nerve and eye drops are being used for numbing the eyes.

During the Procedure (4 Questions):

It is a daycare procedure so hospital stay is usually not required. It is for about 15 minutes.

Cataract surgery will take around one hour to complete.

Before the surgery, the surgeon will examine your eye, checks your focusing power and prescribe with some eye drop medicine before starting the surgery these medicine help in preventing infection and in reducing swelling during and after the surgery.

First your eyes is numbed with an eye drop, you may also be prescribed with some sedatives.  You will be awake during the surgery. The surgeon will look through a special microscope and he makes small tiny incisions near the edge of cornea, these incisions are used to reach the lens of your eyes. The surgeon removes the cataract and then remove it and puts the new lens in its place. There is no need to stitch the incision, these will heal by themselves.

Post the Procedure (13 Questions):

After cataract surgery, your doctor will tell you to wear UV-protecting sunglasses for at least one year, even though your intraocular lens has a special UV coating too.

Minimally invasive surgery offers patients several benefits such as smaller incisions, faster recovery times, reduced pain, and scarring. In many cases, minimally invasive surgery also offers a higher accuracy rate compared to traditional open surgery.

Generally, any pain and discomfort from cataract surgery subside within a few days after the outpatient procedure. Vision clears quickly and complete healing takes about eight weeks. Any strenuous activity including exercise should be put on hold for at least a week.

You will need to be in the recovery room for 15-20 minutes after that you can go home.

You will need to use eye drops after surgery and you should follow your doctor instruction such as don’t use soap water directly in your eyes. Don’t rub or press your eyes. After 8 weeks, your eye should be fully healed. About 90% of people see better after cataract surgery. But don't expect your vision to be perfect. You may still need to wear glasses or contacts.

There are very rare side effects of cataract surgery such as an eye infection, bleeding, retinal detachment, drooping eyelid, temporary rise in eye pressure.

Few days after surgery your eyes may feel itch and sore and you may also gave some tears in your eyes and it will be difficult for you to see in bright light.  Your doctor will prescribe you an eyedrop to prevent infection, it will take around to recover completely.

Your vision may appear cloudy because the lens capsule the part of your eye which hold the artificial lens begins to thicken up. It can be corrected by a YAG laser which only takes few minutes.
