In an allogenic transplant, stem cells are collected from a matching donor and transplanted into the patient to suppress the disease and restore the patient's immune system. An allogeneic stem cell transplant is different from an autologous stem cell transplant, which uses stem cells from the patient's own body.
An autologous stem cell transplant uses the patient's own stem cells, harvested, frozen and then infused back into the body after chemotherapy or radiation therapy. An allogenic stem cell transplant uses stem cells collected from a donor including a sibling with perfectly matched stem cells.
It takes about 24 hours for your stem cells to reach the bone marrow. Then they start to grow, multiply, and help the marrow make healthy blood cells again.
Allogeneic stem cell transplantation involves transferring the stem cells from a healthy person (the donor) to the patient's body after high intensity chemotherapy or radiation.
In most cases, the donor is given medicine so the bone marrow comes to the blood flow. One unit of the blood is retrieved from the donor. The bone marrow is then taken out of the blood of the donor. So essentially, for donor the procedure nothing more than donating one unit of the blood.
If the patient has siblings, there are 30% chances that the sibling is fully matched HLA. However,in the absence of siblings OR unmatched siblings, the doctor will search for the matching HLA in the worldwide registry. There are 30% chances that you may find a fully matched unrelated donor somewhere in the world. If neither of these works then the parent of the patient can become a donor but they will be half-matched donor.. Which is called haplo transplant OR half-matched donor transplant. The success rate of a fully matched sibling transplants is about 90%. A fully matched unrelated donor is also about 80-90%. For half-matched transplants through the parents, the success rates are between 60-70%.
Patients stay at the hospital anywhere from 30 to 50 days after they receive their transplant. Post-discharge, the patient is advised to stay nearby for another 90 days at least.
