The doctor may recommend an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) before you get a Holter monitor. Medical tests associated with the procedure account for 10-15% of the total cost. Tests are also included in the treatment package.
When the patient is in the hospital, the pharmacy and medicine bills are included in the package. The package does not include medicines purchased outside the hospital by the patient.
A Holter monitor tracks the heart's rhythm for 24 to 72 hours using electrodes and a recording device. A health care professional can use the data on the recording device to produce an ECG strip to observe the heart's rhythm during the time the monitor was worn.
You return the monitor to the technician after the 24- or 48-hour period. The technician reviews your information, including the EKG and notes, and then sends a report to your provider.
Most cardiac monitors are covered by insurance if prescribed by a doctor. Some extended holters and injectable loop recorders will require prior authorization from insurance.
The Zio Patch is a noninvasive continuous ambulatory ECG adhesive monitoring patch that has received FDA clearance and is less uncomfortable to wear than a typical 24-hour Holter monitor.
