 What Is A LEEP?

LEEP stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure that is used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. A small wire is used in this procedure to charge the tool with an electrical current. The loop is heated with this current that allows it to act as a surgical knife.

Need Of This Procedure

When some changes in the cervix are observed at the time of the pelvic exam or the pap test results are abnormal your doctor is likely to recommend LEEP. These changes can be abnormal cells that could be benign growths, or precancerous. When left untreated precancerous cells may change into cervical cancer. By removing these cells doctors can determine what they are and observe them for further treatment.

A LEEP may also be needed to diagnose and treat genital warts.  It indicates the presence of human papillomavirus that can increase the risk of developing cervical cancer.

When suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease or acute cervix inflammation LEEP is advised.

The Procedure

  • The walls of the vagina will be spread using a speculum. This will provide a clear view of your cervix. A colposcope can also be used to magnify the tissue of the cervix.
  • The doctor will then clean the cervix using vinegar solution. It will turn the abnormal tissue white to see it more easily.
  • At times iodine can also be used in place of vinegar. Iodine can stain normal cervical tissue brown that allows abnormal cells to be seen easily.
  • A local anesthetic will be injected to numb the cervix before beginning the removal process.
  • Once the cervix is the numb doctor will pass the wire loop. It is passed through the speculum and begin to scrape away the abnormal tissue. Some pressure or slight cramping may be felt in this procedure.

Talk to your doctor if you experience severe pain or feel faint.

Recovery

A brown or black discharge is normally expected after the procedure. Your next period can be late, normal, or heavy. You will have to avoid using tampons and menstrual cups. Your doctor will provide medications to ease the pain.
