What is Gynaecological Cancer?
A woman’s reproductive system is focused on the uterus (including the cervix), which is alsocalled the womb. The female reproductive organs are: ovary, vagina,cervix, fallopian tube and uterus. Gynecologic cancers result from the rapid growth and spread of abnormal cells in one of these reproductive organs.
Compared to other types of cancer (like breast or colon cancer), gynecologic cancers are rare, occurring in about 100,000 women in globally each year. Every women is at risk for developing this kind of cancers, and the risk factor enhances with growing age. Risk Factors For Gynaecologic Cancer
Women with below mentioned risk factors, have increased chances to develop Gaenocologic Cancer:
- Human Papillomavirus: It is also known as HPV. Cervical cancer and vulval cancer are often assiciated with HPV. It is a common sexully transmitted viral infection. HPV vaccine is available at hospitals for girls and women betwen the age group of 11 years to 16 years.
- Ageing: With the increasing age the risk for gynaecological cancer also increases.
- Family History: More than 10% of women with ovarian cancer have a family history of the similar disease in thier family. A woman whose mother, daughter or sister had ovarian, Fallopian tube or primary peritoneal cancer should undergo genetic testing for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. (Mutations in these genes are responsible for ovarian cancer.)
- Diethylstilbestrol Exposure: Some gynecologic cancers have been linked with the uterus exposure to diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic form of estrogen that used to be prescribed to pregnant women between 1940 and 1971.
Symptoms of Gynaecologic Cancer
- Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding: Abnormal vaginal bleeding and discharge can occur with any gynecologic cancer. In some cases, pelvic pain can causes uterine and ovarian cancer. Also, bloating, constipation and an increased need to urinate can occur with ovarian cancer but not all patients will have those symptoms.
- Vulvar cancer causes itching and soreness, along with a visible lesion. Doctors might perform a biopsy of the lesion, in which they take a sample and examine it under a microscope to look for cancer cells.
