Pelvic organ prolapsed refers to the process of descending or drooping of the organs including the bladder, uterus, vagina, small bowels  and the rectum.  These organs can prolapsed if they descend into or outside the vaginal canal or anus.

Pelvic organ prolapsed may occur due to pregnancy, labour, childbirth obesity, constipation, pelvic organ cancer and surgical removal of the uterus.

Some of the symptoms of pelvic organ prolapsed includes a pressure of fullness in pelvic area, backache, painful intercourse, constipation, spotting or bleeding from the vagina.

Pelvic organ prolapsed is being diagnosed by bladder function test, urinary tract x-ray, a voiding cystourethrogram, CT scan pelvis, ultrasound and MRI scan of the pelvis.

There are various treatment modalities of pelvic organ prolapsed treatment such as behavioural  treatment, mechanical treatments and surgical treatment.

A pelvic exam is necessary to diagnose pelvic organ prolapse. If you do have prolapse, the urogynecologist will determine which organs are involved and how severe the prolapse is.

If prolapse is left untreated, over time it may stay the same or slowly get worse. In rare cases, severe prolapse can cause obstruction of the kidneys or urinary retention which can cause kidney damage or infection.

Pelvic  organ reconstruction are done under general anaesthesia, this can be done by making a cut in the wall of vagina and then by stitching them into its place or supporting the existing tissues to make it stronger.

You may need 6 to 12 weeks off work to recover, depending on the type of surgery you have.

If you'd like to have children in the future, your doctors may suggest delaying surgery because pregnancy can cause the prolapse to happen again.

Some of the risks involved in pelvic organ prolapsed surgery includes pain, constipation, sexual problems and injury to the nearby organs.
