Before the Procedure (3 Questions):

You are required to spend one night in the hospital and you will be discharged another day. Hospital stay depends on your condition.  

It is a major surgery the standard parathyroidectomy may require an incision which is as long as six inches.

Usually only three main risks of parathyroidectomy surgery is seen such as recurrent laryngeal nerve injury when the nerves controlling your vocal cords are injured and second is low blood calcium level, if the parathyroid gland that lies behind your thyroid gland are injured or removed then your blood calcium levels can be too low. The risk of bleeding is very less usually one in three individual faces the risk of bleeding.

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

You should not eat or drink anything on the night before surgery; you should not drink alcohol for minimum of 24 hrs before surgery. If you are taking ay blood thinner medication inform your doctor about this.

You will be given general anaesthesia and you will be made asleep. A special pillow will be placed below your neck to tilt your head and back.  Two to four inches long inches long incision is being made at the base of your neck depending on the extent of the surgery.  Parathyroid glands are located using the magnifying glasses and the abnormal parathyroid glands are removed then the incisions are closed and they are covered with tapes and gauze.  After surgery you will be sent to be in the recovery room for several hours.

Parathyroidectomy surgery will take around 30 minutes to three hours to complete once you are asleep, it depends how quickly we can remove your abnormal thyroid glands.

Post the Procedure (10 Questions):

The length of the scar is about one to three inches and it is placed in midline of neck to reduce scarring.

Surgical glue or strips will be placed on your incision which will be removed after 10 to 14 days of your surgery. No further dressing is needed on your incision, for healing you have to use Vitamin E oil. You should use sunscreen to protect your incision form sun damage.  You may take shower but don’t wet your incision.

You may need pain medications for 3 to 4 days after surgery. Your calcium levels will be monitored after surgery, if your calcium level is low you may experience some symptoms such as numbness, tingling sensation or muscle cramping. It can be relieved when you take calcium supplements.

There are very less chance that you may need blood transfusion during your surgery, it is not necessary to donate blood before surgery.

You can daily do your normal activities. Only you have to avoid doing strenuous activity or lifting heavy weights. You may drive if you feel well and you are not taking any pain medicines.

Within one to two weeks after surgery when you feel you are ready then you can return back to work.

You can have your normal balanced diet but make sure to drink plenty of fluids.

Approximately after 2 to 4 weeks of your surgery you can have  your post –operative appointment.

After 7-10 days you will get the laboratory result, the result will vary according to the type of surgery
