Ovarian tissue freezing is an experimental technique in which the tissues is freezed and stored from the ovarian cortex that tissues contains undeveloped eggs which can be implanted again in late life when women wants to conceive.

Ovarian tissue freezing is done because it is the only option for you if you are not ready to become pregnant now but you want to make sure that you will get pregnant in future.  Some people also need to undergo ovarian tissue freezing if you some condition such as sickle cell anemia, autoimmune disease such as lupus and gender diversity.

There are multiple steps involved in egg freezing procedure such as:

Ovarian stimulation-You'll take synthetic hormones to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs — rather than the single egg that typically develops monthly. During treatment, your doctor will monitor you. You'll have blood tests to measure your response to ovarian-stimulation medications. Estrogen levels typically increase as follicles develop, and progesterone levels remain low until after ovulation.

In the follow up visit you have to undergo vaginal ultrasound which is a procedure that uses sound waves to create an image of the inside of your ovaries and to monitor the development of fluid filled sacs. Follicles are ready for retrieval after 10 to 14 days then an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin or other medicines are given for eggs to mature.

Egg retrieval-When egg retrieval is done under sedation most common approach for this procedure is transvaginal aspiration. An ultrasound probe is inserted in your vaginal region for identifying the follicles.  Then the needle is guided through the vagina and into the follicle.  A suction device is connected to the needle for removing egg from the follicle, during the procedure multiple eggs can be removed.

Freezing-Shortly after your unfertilized eggs are harvested, they're cooled to subzero temperatures to preserve them for future use.

After the procedure the ovarian tissue is processed, frozen, and sent to a third party, long term storage facility used by numerous and it can be stored for many years until the patient is ready to use the tissue.

If transplantation is successful then there can be natural pregnancy or by in vitro fertilization and the results are successful in one third of patient.

Some of the risks of ovarian tissue freezing includes abdomen pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. You may also have some bleeding, infection or damage to the bowel and the bladder.

You can go back to your normal routine one week after the procedure.

You should contact your doctor if you are having high fever, severe abdominal pain, weight gain in 24 hours, heavy vaginal bleeding and difficulty in urinating.

In some cases the ovarian tissues can grow back when small pieces of ovarian tissues are left in pelvic cavity and can grow and form cysts or haemorrhage and produces pain.

The chances of becoming pregnant after implantation are roughly 30 to 60 percent, depending on your age at the time of egg freezing.
