What are Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy?

Doctors utilise laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, two minimally invasive surgical techniques, to diagnose and treat female factor infertility problems. If you have endometriosis, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, uterine abnormalities, or a history of pelvic infection, your doctor may utilise laparoscopy and hysteroscopy to definitively identify and treat these diseases, either separately or concurrently.

With hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, Reproductive surgeons can remove scar tissue, clean the fallopian tubes, and remove fibroids, cysts, or endometriosis lesions using hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. They can also treat congenital defects such the uterine septum and adhesions, which can lead to miscarriage or early delivery.

Your doctor may use laparotomy (open abdominal surgery) or robotic laparoscopy for more difficult problems including big fibroids and tubal ligation reversal.

What is Laparoscopy?

A laparoscopy technique allows a surgeon to examine the interior of the pelvis, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. This method aids in the diagnosis of a disease. A catheter is placed into the bladder to collect urine during this operation. A needle is used to inject carbon dioxide into the abdomen. The goal of filling the belly with carbon dioxide gas is to keep the abdominal walls away from the rest of the organs and to prevent any physical effort on the internal organs.

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy does not require any incisions. A hysteroscopy is performed to determine the reason for infertility or repeated miscarriages, sample endometrial tissue, and inspect and remove uterine scarring, polyps, or tiny fibroids. A tiny telescope is introduced via the vaginal and cervix into the uterine cavity during hysteroscopy. The images are recorded by the camera using the telescope, and the physicians examine the linings of the inside organs. A sampler is introduced after the operation to capture samples for biopsy in addition to taking images of the organs. Obtaining a sample during this technique is a common and delicate task that takes around 10-15 minutes to complete.

Difference between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy

Carbon dioxide is used by both hysteroscopy and laparoscopy surgeons to provide space between the organs and prevent rugging or injury to the internal organs caused by rubbing against the walls or cavities.

Both laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are performed under general anaesthetic. The main distinction between laparoscopy and hysteroscopy is that laparoscopy can assist physicians in diagnosing a variety of gynaecological problems such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, adhesions, scar tissues, ectopic pregnancy, and other structural disorders, whereas hysteroscopy is used to look inside the cavity and diagnose related disorders. While laparoscopic surgery benefits patients in a variety of ways, the technique is exceedingly difficult for laparoscopy surgeons when compared to regular open surgery.
