Apollo Gleneagles Hospital carried out three major organ transplants from a young male donor in Kolkata - Amit Mukherjee who was declared brain on October 25, 2018.
Mukherjee had a bike accident in Ultadanga on October 15. He was suffered from head injuries and was critical when taken to the hospital.
“He underwent a neurosurgery but no signs of improvement. His condition started deteriorating on Wednesday and was declared brain dead on Thursday morning,” an official of Apollo Gleneagles said.
On Thursday, another apnea test confirmed brain death. The hospital asked the patient’s father whether the family wanted to go for organ donation and he agreed. At least six people will benefit from the decisions of the parents.
The process of harvesting Amit Mukerjee’s organs started at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals. The heart, liver and one kidney were transplanted into three patients at Apollo Gleneagles and another kidney was sent to SSKM Hospital through the green corridor. The corneas were transplanted at Disha Eye Foundation.
With the harvesting of the organs and three transplant beings performed simultaneously is a milestone for not only Apollo Gleneagles but for the State and the Region. The team of doctors led by Dr. Mahesh Kumar Goenka, Dr. Sushan Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Mohan Chand Seal worked tirelessly to provide a new lease of life to the recipients.
