Z plasty is a plastic surgery technique which is being used to improvethe functional and cosmetic appearance of scars, Z plasty can make the scar to align within the natural skin fold. Scars which has been contracted can be lengthened with this technique.
. Yes, Z plasty is a very safe and effective procedure which has been used o correc the deformity in patients who want to get operated within a short time and recovery should be quick. This procedure has got low complication rate and the effect on the overall appearance of the face is minimal.
The fundamental unit of Z plasty is the triangular double transpositional flap. There are also elements of rotation and advancement. Three incisions of equal length are used to create two equal triangles flap.
Some of the common indications for Z plasty technique includes a contracted linear scar across flexor, changing the direction of the scar and the scar is realigned along the natural skin fold or on the lines of minimum skin tension which creates less tension around the wound and gives better appearance of the scars.
Z plasty is the widely is the widely used technique which is used for elongation of the axis of the scar and dispersal of the scar along with breaking of the straight line scar and realigning of the scar.
Z plasty is done by plastic surgeons who are specialized in this technique.
Z plasty creates two triangular flaps of equal dimension and then they are transposed, usually flaps are created using an angle of 60 degree on each side, which can lengthened the scar upto 50 to 70 percent and reorient the direction of wound by 90 degree.
Z plasty surgery takes one to three hours to be done. You can either go home the same day or may wait for overnight.
It will take around one to two weeks for the scar to heal, but the scars continue to heal over a period of one year.
During the initial phase the colour of the scar will fade and the volume will decrease. The stage is there for three to six months after which the scar enters the final phase and it becomes pale and soft.
Initially pain and swelling are worse on the 2nd and 3rd day after surgery and the pain gets better during the next one to two weeks after surgery.
After the procedure patients are required to take care of their wound one to two weeks after surgery. It will take around a few weeks to months to recover completely.
