Valve Replacement Cost In Germany

Whatsapp ChatWhatsApp Us

Valve replacement is a cardiac surgical procedure to address dysfunction or pathology of heart valves. When heart valves become compromised due to conditions like stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (insufficient closure, leading to leakage), valve replacement becomes necessary.

Two primary modalities of heart valve replacement exist:

  • Mechanical Valve Replacement: This approach involves the implantation of artificial valves constructed from durable materials such as metals or carbon composites. Mechanical valves exhibit long-term durability and precise control of blood flow. However, recipients of mechanical valves are required to maintain lifelong anticoagulation therapy to mitigate the risk of thrombotic complications.
  • Biological Valve Replacement: Biological or bioprosthetic valves are obtained from animal (commonly porcine or bovine) or human donor tissue. These valves do not necessitate anticoagulation therapy but have a limited lifespan compared to their mechanical counterparts. Biological valves are often preferred for elderly patients or individuals unable to tolerate anticoagulant treatment.

Valve replacement surgery, whether for the aortic, mitral, tricuspid, or pulmonary valve, is typically performed as follows:

  • Incision: An incision is made in the chest, accessing the heart.
  • Heart-Lung Bypass: A heart-lung bypass machine temporarily takes over blood circulation.
  • Valve Removal: The diseased valve is removed.
  • Valve Implantation: A new mechanical or biological valve is implanted.
  • Closure: The chest incision is closed, and the heart is restarted.
  • Recovery: Post-surgery, the patient undergoes monitoring, and healing occurs in stages, with hospitalization, rehabilitation, and follow-up care.
Valve Replacement cost in Germany is between USD 54000 to USD 66000. Patient has to stay in the hospital for 8 days and outside the hospital for 15 days. The total cost of the treatment depends on the diagnosis and facilities opted by the patient.

Inclusions in the package

The cost of Valve Replacement includes the following:

  • Preoperative diagnostic tests cost [blood tests, a chest X-ray, an echocardiogram (ECG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG)].
  • Surgery cost (cost is different for different types of the valve)
  • Type of Valve (2 variables are available - Mechanical valve and Tissue Valve) Post-Operative cost (depends on the number of follow-up sessions)
  • Medicine cost (blood thinners, antibiotics, etc.)
  • Patient's hospital stay.

Factors affecting cost of Valve Replacement

The overall cost of the procedure also varies based on the patient's condition and preferences. Some of these factors are:

  • Type of hospital and room opted (General, Twin sharing, or Single room)
  • The severity of the disease
  • Post-surgical complication, if it happens (such as bleeding, blood clot, infection, etc.)
  • Cost of Blood products (if required)
  • An extended stay at the Hospital
  • Cost of Accommodation during follow-ups, in case the patient is not a local resident

Frequently asked questions related to expenses that most patients have when planing for Valve Replacement.

How much do the tests for valve replacement cost?

Prior to the surgery, a proper physical examination and tests such as chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, echocardiogram, and coronary angiogram are done. All the tests are covered in the package price.

What are the various types of valves and how much do they cost?

There are several replacement valves available such as tissue valves including donated human aortic valves or animal valves, and mechanical valves consist of plastic, metal, or any other artificial material. Though, certain valve diseases such as mitral valve regurgitation or aortic valve stenosis can be utilized with non-surgical methods. Mechanical valves last longer than tissue valves, hence are more expensive than conventional valves.

All the expenses and medications when you’re at the hospital are included in the medical package during the patient’s stay in the hospital however, these benefits are not covered once the patient is discharged.
