Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is seen as an opening between the two blood vessels which are connecting from heart. If PDA is small then no symptoms are being seen but if the PDA is big then a some problems may be seen such as poor eating, breathlessness etc. The oxygen rich blood instead of circulating in the body goes back to the lung. PDA ligation is method which corrects this problem.
Generally the blood vessels closes after birth and in case of PDA the blood vessels remains open. Some of the blood goes from heart to the body instead of going to lungs.
PDA is heart defect which is seen few weeks or days after birth, usually the ductus arteriosus is a normal part of fetal blood circulation. When a baby is born there is an opening which is present between the aorta and pulmonary area and it generally closes itself after birth.
In some cases PDA remains undetected, you may experience some symptoms such as heart palpations, shortness of breath, high blood pressure.
If the patent ductus arteriosus is small it will not cause any problem and may not need any treatment. If the patent duct arteriosus is large and it is not being treated it can allow poor oxygenated blood flow in the wrong direction, this causes weaking of the heart muscle causing failure of heart along with some other complications.
PDA can lead to some disease such as congestive heart failure which is a disease of the right side of heart and it also increases the risk of endocarditis, which can be a life threatening infection of lining which covers heart chambers, valves and main arteries.
The cause of PDA is unknown but genetics have a role in PDA, this condition is more commonly seen in premature babies and mainly affects girls rather than boys.
If doctor sees any defect in your heart he may prescribe you some tests such as electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, chest x ray and cardiac catherization.
Some of the risk factors of PDA includes premature birth, rubella infection, living at high altitude and new born girls.
PDA is being repaired surgically in the operating room and iteis done under general anaesthesia, it involves closing of the PDA with stitches and sutures for preventing surplus blood from entering the lungs.
PDA ligation is done on blood vessels not on heart, first an incision is being made on the side of child’s chest in between the ribs and the doctor uses small tools between the ribs for closing the blood vessels with stitches and then the incisions are sutured.
The procedure of PDA ligation will take around one to three hours. When your child is sent to the recovery room it will take around one to six hours to wake from the effect of anaesthesia.
This surgery is usually done under general anaesthesia.
You will be given instructions by your doctor’s for your child. Your child will be prescribed with pain medications and antibiotics and you will be thought how to feed and give medicines to your baby
Within few weeks only child is completely recovered after PDA ligation surgery.
The child who are poorly feed before the surgery are able to eat better and they gain weight faster.
