Cancer arising in cells of the cervix is known as Cervical Cancer. The cervix is the lowermost part of the uterus. This kind of cancer can be prevented by a PAP smear and HPV vaccination.
There are signs and symptoms like bleeding in between periods, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, and lower back pain.
For prevention, we have Gardasil vaccination.
For treatment, we have various surgical procedures, depending upon the stage of cancer we can do
Post surgery, procedures like Brachytherapy, Teletherapy, Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure, Radiation Therapy, or Cervical Conization may be required.
The cost of Chemotherapy includes:
Before starting chemotherapy, a few diagnostic tests may be done, such as Blood tests, X-rays, MRI, CT, PET, or ultrasound
Chemotherapy session cost (depends on the number of sessions required)
Patient's hospital stay (only in case of high-dose chemotherapy)
The overall cost of the procedure also varies based on the patient's condition and preferences. Some of these factors are:
The stage and type of cancer
Post-surgery / Chemotherapy / Radiation Therapy
Any additional tests may be required to know the status of the disease during the course of treatment
An extended stay at the Hospital
A Pap test can detect abnormal cells in the cervix and an HPV DNA test helps find infection in the cervix that is likely to lead to cervical cancer. Other than this, Punch biopsy, Endocervical curettage are done to determine the chances of cervical cancer. Lastly, Imaging tests such as X-ray, CT, MRI, and PET help understand if cancer has spread beyond your cervix. The package typically doesn’t include the cost of these tests.
The chemotherapy drugs most commonly used for treating cervical cancer include topotecan (Hycamtin), cisplatin (Platinol), paclitaxel (Taxol), gemcitabine (Gemzar), carboplatin (Paraplatin), etc. These medicines are not covered in the package price.
You need to take the medicines prescribed by your doctor in case you experience pain, The medicines are not covered in the package. You may also have to go for Post-treatment management to check an early detection of any recurrences that might be cured at an early stage, this is also not a part of the procedure cost.
The hospital stay is usually 1 to 2 days, which is covered in the package. It is followed by a 2-3-week recovery period, which the patient has to incur on their own.
Though most health insurance plans available cover Cervical Cancer, some policies generally pay only for inpatient hospitalization and treatment at hospitals. They do not cover the entire cost of treatment. Please check with your provider before selecting a treatment plan.
Treatments like high-dose vitamin c, B17, venofer, artusenate, and curcumin help against cancer cells. Moreover, radiation therapy may be used instead of surgery to shrink the tumor.
