The effect of botulinum toxin injection last for few days.  Within three to six months the toxins wear off and the muscles regain its movement because of which the wrinkles can come back and some problems like migraine and sweating may occur.

Even though botulinum toxin injection are life threatening small doses of it are considered safe, very small rate of the adverse effect of the procedure are seen

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

You should inform your doctor about all the current list of medicines such as blood thinners and NSAIDS  and supplements which you are taking some medicines increases the risk of bruising at the site of injection. If you are taking alcohol you should discontinue it 24 hours before surgery because alcohol makes you more prone to redness and bruising.

There will be mild discomfort after the procedure the injection may sting and will make you feel uncomfortable but it is done very quickly. In some cases a topical numbing agent is also being applied to the skin before giving injection.

You can return back to work and do most of the activities after the treatment. You should follow some of the instructions such as:

  • Don’t rub or put pressure on the area for 12 hours.
  • Stay upright for three to four hours.
  • Avoid physical exertion for 24 hours.

Some of  the risks and complications of the procedure includes pain, swelling, redness, bruising, flu-like symptoms, headache, neckpain, drooping of the eyelids few days after the treatment.

You should not go for botulinum toxin injection if you are having any neuromuscular disease, drooping eyelids, weak muscles of face, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

There is minimum downtime of this procedure you can return back to your daily routine just after the treatment.

You should contact your doctor if you are having any issues such as vision problems, urinary tract infection, blood in urine, shortness of breath, trouble in swallowing, slurred speech, numbness or paralysis in the area being treated and stomach upset.

Some of the long term side effects of Botox injection are muscle weakness at the site of injection, smooth appearance of skin at the injection site and gradual muscle atrophy with prolonged usage.

Botox are being injected with a micro needle, mostly it is being done in the forehead and the outer areas of your eyes. One  to three  injections are usually given for each muscle.

When applied with topical anaesthetic the procedure is virtually painless even without a numbing agent the pain is minimal you may only feel a little pinch.

Common side effects may include muscle weakness near the injection site, difficulty swallowing, muscle stiffness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, among others. You may also notice bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. As with any time the skin is pierced by an injection, there is a chance for infection.
