Frequently Asked Questions Related to Bile Duct Cancer Treatment

Before the Procedure (6 Questions):

Cirrhosis is the main cause of bile duct cancer which is caused by scar tissue and it is caused by irritants such as alcohol and some other diseases such as hepatitis and some studies have also shown that any infection with hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus has increased the risk of intra hepatic bile duct cancer.

Bile duct cancer blocks the bile ducts which makes the skin appears yellow and eyes white.  As the bile duct is very small duct which is being connected to different organs of the body which are part of digestive system.

Some of the symptoms of bile duct cancer are your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow (jaundice), you may also have itchy skin, loss of appetite or losing weight, dark colour urine or stool, feeling generally unwell, feeling tired or having no energy a high temperature.

Bile duct cancer is often treatable. But it can be difficult to treat. The treatment you have will depend on the size and type of bile duct cancer you have

If the cancer is diagnosed early then the survival rate of 5 years is 25% and if the cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes then the survival rate of 5 years is 8% and if the cancer has spread to distant body parts then the survival rate is 2%.

All of the bile duct cancer starts first in the mucosa and with time they can grow through the wall towards the outerside of bile duct and if the tumor grows through the bile duct, it can grow into the nearby blood vessels, organs and other structures.

During the Procedure (4 Questions):

Chemotherapy does not cure bile duct cancer but it may help people to live longer, it can shrink tumor or slows their growth for some time.

If the cancer has not spread and is in a place where surgery can be safely done, the tumor and some of the tissue around it will be removed which reduces the chances of coming back of cancer.  In some cases chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy may be given after surgery.

The Whipple procedure involves removing part of the bile duct, part of the stomach, part of the small intestine, and the head (the rightmost section) of the pancreas. The remaining portions of the stomach, bile duct, and pancreas are then joined to the remaining small intestine so that digestive enzymes can mix with food. This ensures that the pancreatic fluids and bile will flow into the small intestine.

Some of the other treatment of bile duct cancer surgery are chemotherapy and external-beam radiation therapy.
