Arthrodesis is also called Artificial Ankylosis or Syndesis, which is the artificial induction of joint ossification between two bones by surgery. This is done to relieve pain in the joint which cannot be managed by pain medication, splints, etc. The procedure of Arthrodesis involves an incision around the joint followed by the removal of all the cartilage present in joint so that the bones are touching directly. Then, the joints will be held in place with metal hardware.

After the surgery, you may need to be in the hospital for 2 to 3 days. Your leg will be placed in a splint that reaches up to your knee and you may require crutches for walking.

There are several ways of performing Arthrodesis and the method selected to do the procedure depends on various factors such as overall health of patient and the surgeon opinion. In one procedure bone grafting is done where bone tissue is taken from another part of patient body this is called as autograft. In other procedure the synthetically manufactured donor bone tissues are being used.
