Anterior cervical corpectomy is the procedure in which the vertebral done and the intervertebral disc are being removed and to get relieve from pain which is caused due to stress on the spinal cord and spinal nerves in the neck.
Surgery is indicated if the patient symptom do not respond to non operative measures, patient has got severe pain, spinal cord is compressed, progressive neurologic deficit, loss of bowel and bladder control, difficulty walking and impaired movements in hands, in typing etc.
Coprectomy procedure involves removing the front part of vertebra, the vertebral body and the bony portion which surrounds and protects the spinal cord.
You should tell your doctor about any medications which you are taking and the supplements. You should tell your doctor if you have any allergy to any food and medications. On the day of surgery remove the nail polish and the acrylic nails and you also need to remove contact lens, eye glasses and dentures.
Anterior cervical corpectomy procedure takes around 2 to 3 hours depending on the number of spinal nerves involved.
This procedure is done under general anaesthesia, the neck is approached from the front region and the surgeon clean the skin and make small vertical incision in front of neck. After that the neck and tissues are gently retracted to get access to spine, after that the damaged disc is being removed between the upper and lower vertebrae.
Patient are told to be in hospital for the whole night and the next day they are discharged.
The risks and complications of anterior cervical corpectomy are nerve root damage, damage of spinal cord, bleeding, infection, graft dislodgement, damage to the trachea and continuous pain.
It will take around four to six weeks to return back to your normal activities and the doctor may advise you to work with a physiotherapist for strengthening the muscles near your neck and back region.
You should contact your doctor if you are noticing some signs and symptoms of infection such as redness, wound drainage, fever of more than 101 degree and swelling in calf or legs and difficulty in controlling bowel and bladder.
