Frequently Asked Questions Related to Adrenal Cancer Treatment

Before the Procedure (9 Questions):

The survival rate of adrenal cancer is 50 to 60 percent, the prognosis for adrenal cancer which has spread to nearby organs is very less favorable and its survival rate is 10 to 20 percent.

Surgery is the best treatment for all adrenal cancer and the aim of surgery is to remove all the cancer as the adrenal gland with tumor is removed some tissues is needed to be removed near the adrenal gland consisting of kidney and part of the liver.

Adrenal cancer is a  very rare form of cancer, the tumor can grow large in size without causing any symptoms, about half of the patient with adrenal cancer pain can be there if tumor presses nearby organs.

Symptoms are based on the extra hormones released by the tumor and symptoms such as pain can occur if the tumor presses on nearby organs.

Adrenal cancer is being diagnosed by a CT scan or MRI and if sometimes patients have the symptoms of Cushing disease then blood test is being done to measure the abnormal level of hormone.

If the adrenal cancer is found in the early stage then there are chances of getting it treated.  If the cancer has been spread to the areas beyond the adrenal gland then the chances of getting it treated becomes very less, treatment is only meant to delay the progression or recurrence of cancer.

Adrenal cancer are spread due to DNA mutation which turn on the oncogenes and turn off tumor suppressor genes. Some patient having adrenal cancer have inherited DNA mutation from their parent which increases the risk of developing disease.

Adrenal cancer are very aggressive and they can spread to the other body parts easily. As the adrenal gland is the most vascular organ in body with many blood vessels that can carry malignant cells throughout the body.

When the adrenal cancer grows it presses on the nearby organs and tissues and they can cause pain near the tumor, you may have a feeling of fullness in abdomen or difficulty in eating.

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

The treatment of adrenal gland depends on the type and the treatment includes surgery, radiation, cancer drugs (chemotherapy) or drugs to control the release of hormones.

Adrenalectomy surgery takes around three to four hours to complete under general anaesthesia.

A large incision is being made in the abdomen region to remove the adrenal glands. In laparoscopic surgery a small incision is being made in the back region and then a thin microscope is being used for visualizing the inside of the abdomen. The tumors less than 6mm are being removed by this method.

Post the Procedure (7 Questions):

Patients will have to take hormonal supplements to replace the loss of the adrenal gland.  With time if the cancer returns or spreads, more surgery or chemotherapy is again recommended.

The recovery after Adrenal gland cancer surgery is two weeks the symptoms will improve with time.

Some of the risks and complications after surgery are bleeding and blood clots, damage to nearby organs, hernia, infection, reactions to anesthesia and difficulty in wound healing.

Adrenal cancer treatment involves surgery for removing all the cancer other form of treatment might be used for preventing cancer from coming back.

In stage and 2 of adrenal cancer surgery is the main treatment, the entire adrenal gland is removed since the patient has 2 adrenal gland removing the diseased part which not cause any problem to the patient and if the lymph nodes are enlarged they will be removed as well as checked to see the cancer in it.

Surgery is the main treatment for stage III adrenal cancer. The goal of surgery is to remove all of the cancer and the surgeon might also need to remove some tissue around the adrenal gland, including part (or all) of the nearby kidney and part of the liver. After surgery radiotherapy is also given to prevent the cancer from coming back.

In stage IV when the cancer has spread to other body parts then it cannot be cured by surgery some doctors may recommend surgery for removing the tumor as much as possible. This surgery is called debulking, removing most of the cancer will help in reducing the hormone production. Radiotherapy may also be given to treat any other cancer areas which are causing symptoms.
