Abdominoperineal surgery is done to remove the anus, rectum and a part of sigmoid colon by making an incision in the abdomen region.  

This procedure is most often used to treat rectal cancers located very low in the rectum.

Abdominoperineal surgery is done for removing the distal colon, rectum and anal sphincter by using both anterior abdominal and perineal incision which can cause permanent colostomy.

In abdominoperineal surgery the tumor is removed along with the anal canal and the sphincter which creates a permanent end colostomy, both the tumor and distal margin must allow preservation of the sphincter complex.

Abdominoperineal surgery will take around two to three hours to complete under general anaesthesia.

Abdominoperineal resection will completely remove the distal colon, rectum and the anal sphincter. In this procedure abdominal and perineal incision are being made.

An incision is made in the abdomen and the anus, rectum and the part of the sigmoid colon is being removed through that incision and intestine end part are being attached to the opening in the surface of abdomen and body waste is being collected in a disposable bag.

It will take few days to recover from surgery depending on the surgery and overall health of the patient, it may take around 3 to 6 weeks to recover.
