24 hour Holter monitoring is a type of heart monitoring device which records the activity of heart for 24 to 48 hours. If you are having an irregular heart beat or palpations of heart the cardiac monitor will help in diagnosing the problem.

You may need to undergo Holter monitor if you have an inconclusive electrocardiogram or a type of heart test. If the doctor is not able to detect the problem through EKG then a Holter monitor will help in it by gathering more information about your heart activity.

Holter monitoring is being used to find the cause of arrhythmia, heart palpatations, unexplained dizziness and to check whether your heart is getting proper oxygen, heart medications are working or to check the working of pacemaker.

If you need treatment for heart symptoms then a Holter monitor will be appropriate for you and you should not use Holter monitor for routine screening of you are not having any symptoms.

EKG is used for measuring the activity of heart at that moment while your body is in rest.  There are chances that your heart rhythm and symptoms will change.

Holter monitor is being used to record your heart continuously for 24 to 48 hours  while EKG is not continuous it only records the activity of heart when you feel the symptoms and activate the monitor.

During the Procedure (4 Questions):

It will take around 20 minutes tin fitting the electrodes and then monitor. The cardiologist will put three electrodes in chest which are the small sticky patches being connected to  monitor along with leads.

You have to wear the Holter monitoring device around your waist being clipped into a belt or waistband.

You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for a Holter monitor only you need to shave your chest when electrodes are being attached.

First the technician attaches the electrode to the chest and then the monitor is being placed which connects it to the electrode. The monitor is kept in pocket or a  bag you can wear it like a strap or a purse. You can do most of your daily activities while you are wearing the monitor.

Post the Procedure (6 Questions):

You have to wear loose fitting clothes so that the electrodes does not pull off while you are given.

It will take around 2 weeks for the technician to scan all the information from the monitor into the computer and then for the cardiologist to interpret the information.

While wearing Holter monitor you should not bath, shower, swim, don’t go near a high –voltage area or a metal detector or get an x ray done.

When it is sent to the technician they processes the record and send the report to the you. It will take a week or two to sent the report. They will advice you more cardiac test, heart medications, pacemakers or cardioversion procedure so that your heart return to a steady rhythm.

A Holter monitor has no risks or pain associated with it, you may have some itchiness or irritation due to it.

After one or two weeks you will be called by your doctor to get the result of the procedure and the result will show that the heart monitor has detected  a heart rhythm disorder such as artial fibrillation, bradycardia, tachycardia or premature ventricular contractions.
