What Should I Expect During Recovery From a Facelift Surgery?

In 2017, 113,978 women had facelift surgery. Women, mostly in their 40s and 50s, have this surgery to address the early signs of aging. Sagging skin, deep folds around the nose, crease lines around the eyes, double skin, and a drooping chin are women’s enemies. Surgeries like facelifts help them to get rid of these enemies and restore a youthful appearance.

And over 234000 facelifts were performed by surgeons on men in 2020. The popularity among men in 2020 arose when they were working from home. The video calls made them hyper-aware of their appearance, and being at home allowed them the recovery time they wouldn’t have had while working from the office.

Both males and females intend to regain a vibrant appearance by undergoing facelifts. Let us know more about facelifts.

What Is A Facelift?

Facelift, also known as Rhytidectomy, is a restorative surgery that firms the sagging tissue, smoothens the crease lines on your face, lifts the deep facial tissue, and tightens the skin by removing the excess. The patient receives a more natural and youthful appearance. It upsurges one’s self-confidence.

The procedure involves small unobtrusive incisions on both sides of the face. It gives access to the deeper layers of the skin to the surgeon. Though the technique used depends on factors like the patient’s anatomy, goals, and the extent of the facelift. It is done under local anesthesia and takes about 2- 5 hrs.

Currently, countries like Thailand, Turkey, and India are widely popular for facelift surgery. To know more about the treatment in various countries, read:

What To Expect During The Recovery Phase?

The recovery time varies as everyone heals at their own pace. Your recovery will depend upon the outlook of your attitude toward your surgery.

  1. Soon After Surgery: Post-surgery, you will be kept under observation. The bandages covering the face will help you with the swelling. Because of anesthesia, numbness will persist for some time before it wears off. Once the effect is over, the tightness around the face and neck will begin to crawl. The patient experiences discomfort and might feel pain. You might feel tired soon after the surgery. Avoid painkillers in this phase, it will make the patient more drowsy. Elevating the head of the bed while they rest will help the patient. The bandages are removed the next day after surgery by the surgeon.

  2. Swelling: On the second day of your surgery, it will range from minimal to maximum. Due to swelling, the face feels heavy, and you can feel the throbbing. Ice packs, elevating the head, and staying in bed minimize the swelling.

  3. Pain: You may or may not feel the pain, but tightness and discomfort will stay by your side for a few days. It is tough to open your mouth or move your neck. So the doctor advises you to stay in bed for a few weeks and avoid talking. Only take painkillers prescribed by your doctor because strong painkillers can affect your recovery time with other side effects like depression.

  4. Bruises: Once the swelling starts coming down on the fourth or fifth day of surgery, bruises appear. Eventually, the bruises will fade away.

  5. Recovery Time: Normally, it takes two weeks for people to feel like themselves again without swelling and bruising. The facial contours and improvements are visible in the third and fourth weeks post-surgery. After a month, patients can resume their work and social life. The patient can take a year to get over the residual swelling or tightness.

  6. Accept Your Recovery: You must deal with your recovery patiently. Having a positive approach will help you recover sooner. Inform your physician if you encounter any problems. And do not go surfing the internet to find solutions or answers.

Avoid looking at mirrors on the second and third days. It is when your face undergoes the most changes and might add to your facelift blues. Instead of panicking, worrying, or getting angry, welcome every part of it in your recovery phase.
