Scoliosis is a spinal deformity that bends the vertebral column sideways altering the structure of the body. It occurs right before puberty and gradually aggravates with time if left untreated, soon affecting the lungs and other organs near the spine. 15-year-old Mary Rachel Maitee Khodabacus from Mauritius suffered from a severe 50 degrees spinal curve due to scoliosis. Hoping to correct it, she along with her family arrived in India. Her father, Mr. Max Khodabacus, talks about their medical trip here:
Where did Mary have her treatment in India?
How difficult was it for her to carry out the day-to-day chores?
It was very difficult for her to stand or sit properly. The curve had aggravated to such an extent that her movement got restricted. Doctors back in Mauritius told that she requires an immediate surgery else her condition will worsen. Although we knew that a scoliosis correction surgery is performed in several hospitals, in such a dire conjuncture we only looked for the best healthcare options. Since she has also undergone several other orthopedic surgeries in her knee, ankle and both the hips the condition was pretty complicated.
How did the treatment go?
The surgery was excellently done by Dr. Pawar - one of the best orthopedic doctors in India. Her spine has been completely straightened and she is healthy. Till the surgery was performed, our heart was stuck in our throats as we didn’t know whether her spine can be restored properly or not. We are lucky to have reached out to the right doctor and hospital. The infrastructure and medical facility of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital is praiseworthy.
When did you decide to consult Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital?
We got to know about the hospital from my case manager at Vaidam Health, where I enquired about Mary. She helped me to get an appointment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
In what other ways did Vaidam Health assist you?
In communicating with Vaidam we realized that the team is professional, quick in their responses, is very organized and responsible in their endeavors and is amicable and warm. I remember how my case manager reassured me that my daughter is going to be fine and indeed she has recovered so well after the surgery done at the best orthopedic hospital in India. Every information about the cost and accommodation was provided to us before we stepped in the country. They have even followed up with us and I knew that if I face any trouble the team of Vaidam will be there to help. I admit that I have made the right choice and would recommend others to choose Vaidam for their treatment in India.
