Pushpavati Deo from Fiji is sharing her experience of Knee Replacement Surgery.
Puspa Deo of Fiji has always been an active person. A housewife and mother of two, her life at home kept her busy. Now close to her 60s, she had largely been protected which included common illnesses. However, over time, she noticed a sharp pain in her knees, which she, at this time attributed to arthritis.
During her free time she enjoyed everyday pleasures like gardening and visiting the nearby temple where she would congregate with other women for small chit chats. It was during one of her temple visits in September that Puspa had a minor accident - she tripped over a few stairs and went flying and landed on her knees in what she describes an “awkward” way.
Just days after her ‘little’ accident, Pushpa explained her pain to a family friend who also happened to be a doctor. The friend suspected that Pushpa may require a procedure called Total Knee Replacement (TKR). To Pushpa’s surprise, she had never heard of this procedure and couldn’t ascertain the gravity of her medical condition.
Knee replacement surgery is one of the most successful surgeries in all of the medicine with more than 600,000 surgeries performed each year, according to Indian Spinal Injuries Center. Total knee replacement is a safe and effective procedure to treat pain and help patients return to their normal activities.
It was at this point that Vineet Deo, Pushpa’s 24-year-old son decided to intervene. Since the entire family was oblivious of the exact medical condition she was suffering from, Vineet decided to search the internet for more information. His persistent searches lead him to Vaidam’s website. Vineet still recalls, “My first interaction went very well, I was instructed to send medical reports so that doctor’s could give us a better idea of her condition.” From here onwards, Vineet describes the entire process a ‘breeze’, “we didn’t have to worry about anything, our dedicated health rep took care of all our needs - always following through on her promises.”
After going through the list of top knee surgeons in India, the family finally decided to consult with Dr. Vivek Mahajan from the Centre for Indian Spinal Injuries. “Looking at Dr. Mahajan’s vast experience in the specialization, we were sure that he was the right doctor to operate on my mother”, says Vineet. “We were also a little worried about the budget, since this was a very high-profile doctor, however, the cost calculator on the Vaidam page told us a different story”, adds Vineet. After considering all things and knee replacement surgery cost in India, the family decided to make an appointment with the doctor and began making travel arrangement to India.
Arriving in New Delhi on 17 March, 2018, the two travelers - Pushpavati and her husband Paramdev, were noticeably anxious about arriving in an unknown city. “We felt anxious in the beginning, but when we saw our name on the Vaidam placard, both of us were filled with a sense of relief. The smiling member of Vaidam's team picked up the duo from the airport and dropped them off at their guest house. Pushpa now could focus on getting better in the next few days. “I was glad that my husband was there with me, I can send him running around if I needed anything", says a smiling Pushpa.
Preliminary test showed that both knees required partial replacement surgery. Dr. Mahajan of the best hospital for knee replacement surgery in India let her know about this and began preparations shortly, “We picked the one knee that hurt the most and then moved to the other, the entire surgery took us about 3 hours”.
Pushpa underwent surgery on March 20 and returned back to Fiji on April 17, thanks to Dr. Mahajan’s expertise and the help of physical therapy. “He made sure to address my questions ‘no matter what’,” she acknowledges.
“Our dedicated health rep from Vaidam really went out of her way, educating us about what to expect, and providing an exceptional level of care. Throughout she was honest and always kept her promises,” concludes Paramdev.
