It was at the end of 2017 when Mahendra, a citizen of Guyana, who suffers from high blood pressure, decided to go for a medical check-up. The results revealed that his creatinine level was increasing, which was an indication that his kidney function will suffer soon if level is not maintained. Doctor revealed that it was a matter of a few months before his kidneys failed completely.
“The diagnosis was a shocking surprise,” recalls Mahendra. “I had no symptoms in past. Nevertheless, due to high blood pressure I went for diagnosis.” The doctor explained him options available to tackle with this issue, which were transplant or dialysis.
Mahendra did not want to depend on dialysis for rest of his life and was skeptical to go for transplant surgery. During this period, his uric acid was increased causing other health problems such as leg pains, irritation and felt tired all the time. He lost the will to live. However, his wife refused to let him give up on life.
She nerved herself and did research to decide with the treatment options provided by a doctor. She concluded that a kidney transplant is the best option but finding perfect match donor was a nerve-wracking. She underwent required medical tests to see if she was a suitable donor. The hope revived when this couple came to know that her kidney was a match.
As the adage goes, god help those who help themselves. What happened next goes really well with it! One of their family friend directed them to Vaidam. Just few emails, calls and appointment was fixed for 27th March, 2019 with India’s best urologist associated with Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj – Dr. Rajeev Sood. Duo were picked from the airport and accompanied to the hotel by Vaidam’s executive.
Next day they made their way to the hospital along with Vaidam’s executive, who helped them with all the formalities required at the hospital. After examining the medical reports thoroughly, Dr. Sood provided them with daily plan and medications that were to be followed by them for next few days. This step is necessary before transplantation to make sure both patient and donor are safe. After 10 days or so, medical tests were performed again and thereafter the surgery was started.
The surgery was performed successfully. Mahendra and his wife, who was donor also, were hospitalized for 10 days. They flew back to their home country happy and content on 25th May 2019. Today, Mahendra is a picture of health. He follows the advice of doctor to stay healthy.
“My wife is my pillar of strength who gave me gift of life. More than that, Vaidam team and Dr. Sood are my saviors who helped me in unknown country. I can hardly recall any moment when Vaidam team didn’t helped me. Their team member was always there, from pick-up to drop and for other hospitals formalities”, words by Mahendra.
