Mr. Ian Edward Fergusan shares his medical travel experience of the "big leap" from Australia to India
Severe pain coupled with inflammation of the hip joint had made 65-year-old Ian Edward Fergusan’s life cumbersome. Afraid of experiencing such stinging pain, that wringed through his left hip every time he tried to move, Ian’s daily activities of mere walking got restricted. Seven years into this torment, he could not bear it anymore and finally came to India for a hip replacement surgery.
What had led to such severe conditions of your hip joint?
I was diagnosed with end-stage osteoarthritis. I have been going through this painful ordeal for about three or four years. My left hip joint suffered severe inflammation. It reddened and swelled. The simple action of sitting down or standing up was so painful; it was no less than hell for me. I literally had to drag myself while walking. Being an active and athletic person, I could not perform any of my work properly. My life tumbled down to an abyss of pain from where I never hoped I could get out.
Where did you have the hip replacement surgery in India?
The hip replacement surgery was done at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre by Dr. Vivek Mahajan. In Australia, the medical reports revealed that the cartilages of my hip joint have been completely worn out that led to minimal joint space causing a lot friction amongst the bones resulting in pain and swelling.
Has the surgery helped?
The surgery has been fantastic. Dr. Mahajan and his team of the best hip replacement surgeons in India along with the whole medical infrastructure of the hospital are incredible. The dressing was waterproof and clean. The clinical hygiene of the hospital is maintained perfectly. After 5 days post surgery, I was discharged from the hospital and physiotherapy sessions followed. The pain and the swelling are gone. I am comfortably walking again and it feels much better. Prior to the surgery, I was really concerned about the kind of hip implant that would be used and wondered if it could give me the opportunity to be active once again. But now I do have hope and am confident enough.
When did you decide to travel to India for the treatment?
Back in Australia, it was taking a lot of time to get the treatment. As I said earlier, I was really apprehensive about what kind of implant will be used and I wanted the best quality implant as well as treatment. So, I did some research online and saw that India is a country that provides with best quality implants, expert surgeons and the price was also reasonable and within our budget. On further research, we came across Vaidam Health’s website and contacted them.
How did the team of Vaidam help you?
Vaidam helped us extensively to get the best hospital for hip replacement surgery in India and negotiated with the hospital staff. The team is very quick in their responses, is very organized and amicable. I did not have to wait long for my treatment because it was only in the next day of my arrival that I was operated. Pick up was duly arranged and someone was already waiting for us when we arrived at the airport. I gained a lot of confidence after I contacted them because they are very professional and they guided me to choose the right healthcare facility for my treatment. The accommodation they provided me with was also near the hospital and was very convenient.
