Bed Ridden With Several Burns and Spine Injury Liberian Soldier Jefferson Papie Titus Gets Respite from the Agony in India

Severely injured in a mine blast Liberian Army soldier, Jefferson Papie Titus suffered from multiple burns and spine injury. Although the treatment went on for months in Liberia, the recovery was slow that affected his lifestyle. He cannot walk and was bedridden for a long time. After searching for better medical options online, Titus finally came to India for his treatment.

What treatment did you have in India for the injuries?

In India, I had my treatment at Fortis Memorial Research Institute. Dr. Amitabh Singh and his team treated the burns through flap surgeries and took care of the other dermatological problems I had whereas Dr. Sandeep Vaishya provided spine rehabilitation.

How severe were the burns?

The burns were very severe and painful. I was heavily injured but I consider myself lucky that my life is saved and no part of my body has been disintegrated as it mostly happens during these tragic scenarios. Since the blast, I have been under bed rest. Although I was provided treatment at the army hospital, the recovery was slow and it was painful. It seemed to be a never ending process and I needed a breakthrough from my condition.

How did the blast affect your spine?

During the blast, the nerves of my spine have been injured in such a way that the doctors said it cannot be corrected and I will not be able to walk. It was pretty difficult to accept this fact and I was taken aback. The fact that I have my legs that would look perfectly healthy after the burns heal, but at the same time I cannot use them is unnerving.

How was the treatment in India?

I had to undergo multiple flap surgeries for the burns and wounds in my body. The surgeries and their recovery have been deftly managed by Dr. Abhishek Singh and his team. They are excellent and very professional. As a surgery was not possible to improve the condition of my spine, Dr. Sandeep Vaishya and his team recommended rehabilitation and medical management. FMRI is truly one of the best orthopedic hospitals in India with excellent doctors, patient care team and infrastructure.

How did you get to know about the hospital and doctor?

The hospital was recommended to me by Vaidam. I came across their website online. Unexpected and surprising as it is, I received a response to my query immediately and thereafter the team helped me to get in touch with the hospital and the best orthopedic doctors in India.

How was your medical trip to India?

After spending almost two months in India and having my treatment at FMRI, I can definitely say that my health has improved a lot. The wounds and burns have completely healed and it is after months that I will be living a pain-free life again. This has been a fruitful medical travel experience. I was accompanied by my wife and medical staff from the Liberian Army Hospital. Vaidam Health has helped us throughout the trip. The team even found us an accommodation and helped us in medical visa application. Vaidam’s service is commendable as they not only provided us with the list of hospitals and doctors and cost but gave us complete guidance before and during our stay in the country.
