Mohamed Ghumra had places to be and people to see. The 58-year-old businessman from the capital city of Zimbabwe was a go-getter. At age 46, Mohamed began feeling intense pain in the right abdominal section, “I felt a dragging pain on the right side which can be quite distracting by the end of the day.” To add to the pain, Mohamed felt the need for frequent urination at night. “I would get up at least 7-9 times a night. I used to find this very tiring as I had to go to work the next day.” Little did Mohamed know, but he was suffering from a commonly misunderstood condition called Nocturia.
During the course of 2 years, Mohamed saw multiple GPs and several specialists about the bladder, “my first GP did a whole lot of x-rays, a CT scan, and multiple blood tests”. However, after multiple tests and two unsuccessful Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), he wasn’t any closer to finding the root cause of his health problems. “They gave me tablets to stop the bladder from working so frequently but these made my emptying worse and they gave me a dry mouth as well, so I had to stop taking them.” His only solace to the ongoing medical challenge was a daily dose of Imovane which helped him sleep peacefully at night.
His condition, unfortunately, took a turn for the worse, after an unsuccessful Cystoscopy procedure, “three days after my Cystoscopy procedure I felt a severe burning in my bladder”. His situation got significantly worse after that, “on one night I noticed blood coming out of my genitals, and things haven’t been the same since.” Since his options back home were almost completely exhausted, he decided to take a different approach and look for alternatives internationally. At this point, he approached Vaidam and spoke to our Patient Relations Team to provide him top 10 urology hospitals in India. With his early apprehensions in mind, he was pleasantly surprised with what lay ahead.
Upon receiving Mohamed’s request, the Vaidam patient relations team quickly went to work, by helping him decide the best treatment possible. Given the patient’s condition and history, this was going to a challenging task. After much consideration, Mohamed finally decided to get treated by Dr. Narmada Prasad Gupta of Medanta Hospital. The doctor in question had extensive experience in Urology and a track record of handling tough cases related to Urological complications.
Mohamed arrived with his family in New Delhi on 25 January 2018, and was immediately taken to the hospital for further tests. “I was initially very apprehensive while arriving in India.” “I was asking myself – I hope I don’t get cheated, and whether the treatment in India would actually work.” Throughout the trip, Vaidam’s patient relations team was in constant touch with Mohamed, reassuring him on his physical wellbeing and overall health.
Eight days after the treatment, Mohamed walked out of Medanta feeling better and content with his overall health. “I know the treatment will take time and perhaps multiple checkups, however, speaking to Dr. Gupta, I feel confident of my recovery. He is the best urologist in India. When asked about how he felt about Vaidam’s role in his coming to India and getting the proper treatment, he says, “I would rate the service 110%, my patient representative was constantly with me throughout the journey. I don’t think I would’ve done it without the help I received.”
Twelve days after arriving in India, Mohamed and his family returned to their home in Harare, Zimbabwe. However, their departure is with a promise - “We will be back for sure, however, the next time our stay will be longer. We would also like to enjoy the touristic pleasures of the country and of course the shopping that my wife missed during this trip.”
