
2-years-old from Sudan Gets a Successful Bone Marrow Transplant in India
Life never got easy for the 2-year-old Hasan Ibrahim since he opened his eyes for the first time. Hasan Ibrahim from Sudan was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia shortly after his birth. Since then, his family had been toiling hard to get their son treated. They consulted a local physician in Sudan after noticing the initial symptoms. After having all the detailed investigations, the doctor suggested administering chemotherapy to the patient. Hasan’s family invested their time and money in his treatment which went successfully. However, shortly after getting the chemotherapy done, the patient had a relapse in the bone marrow and the CNS.
Entirely exasperated by all the futile efforts, Hasan’s parents finally decided to look out for the best hospital outside their country. While searching on the internet, they stumbled upon the website of Vaidam Health. Instantly, a query was posted on the website and a case manager called them to assist further. The case manager, Ibrahim Usmani took reports and shared them with some of the best hematology hospitals in India, after which the opinion of some of the topmost hematologists in India was dispensed to the family. Consequently, after going through the opinions in detail, the family decided to visit the Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurgaon.
Soon, with the assistance of the case manager, the paperwork was completed and the patient arrived in India on 14 October 2018 and the patient’s appointment was fixed with Dr. Vikas Dua, pediatric hemato-oncologist working with FMRI. On the appointment day, Dr. Vikas took a meticulously listened to the case history of the patient, did a physical examination and ordered the required investigations. After getting back the reports the doctor confirmed that the patient needs a bone marrow transplant as he had relapse Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. His CNS was cleared in the tests and the testicular swelling that he had in the past was also resolved. However, the investigations also revealed sepsis which meant he had an infection in his entire body.
Eventually, the patient was put on a 14-day course to treat him for the sepsis. A catheter was inserted into his body and sent for the bone marrow transplant. All the required investigations were conducted, the surgery was carried out successfully. The patient spent the recovery period in the hospital. Before the discharge, Dr. Vikas again examined the patient and counseled his family regarding all the post-operative instructions.
