Doctors in Madurai successfully performed an aortic aneurysm surgery on a 56-year-old woman without replacing the valve. The woman was suffering from breathlessness from the last few months and was diagnosed with life-threatening heart disease with the valvular leak of the aortic valve.
“This type of condition requires expensive surgery which involves the replacement of aortic root, ascending aorta and aortic valve with artificial ones. During surgery, we noticed that the aortic valve was leaking and leaflets were fine. So, we proceed with ascending aorta replacement without valve replacement”, explained Dr. Meenakshisundaram, who performed the operation at Preethi Hospitals, Madurai. The surgery lasted for nearly four hours and the valve repair was assessed by TEE (Trans-Oesophageal Echo).
The patient was discharged on the eight-day post-surgery and requires consistent monitoring for the next two months.
