The newly released documentary on Netflix named ‘Rooting for Rona’ captures the story of baby Roona Begum from North East of India. The 18-month-old Roona suffered from Hydrocephalus due to which her head was swelled to more than three times its normal size. She got life-changing treatment from a leading neurosurgeon of India Dr. Sandeep Vaishya from FMRI, Gurgaon.
Her parents Abdul and Fatema, a poverty-stricken family from their rural village, fixed many appointments with doctors at state-level government hospitals. These hospitals were poorly equipped to treat her. Her fate changed when a photo-journalist visited Roona’s hometown and took a photo of her, which went viral globally. After her plight appeared in several publications, people and a charity came forward to offer help that eventually resulted in Roona being admitted to Fortis Memorial Research and Institute, Gurgaon.
The excess fluid was drained in a procedure in a gradual manner, so the brain gets used to it.
Dr. Vaishya said, “I was surprised when I saw the baby for the first time. Even though I had seen her pictures, I wasn't expecting the head to be so big. Her head measures 94 cm, in similar cases, the average measurement is around 50-60 cm.”
Dr. Sandeep Vaishya is a well-known expert in south Asia for Gamma knife surgeries. He is an awardee of the Herbert Krause Medal and the Sundt Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, USA.
