- Four-year-old Liya used to sleep for five days at a stretch.
- She was diagnosed with a rare sleeping disorder called Kleine-Levin Syndrome, also known as the Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.
- It is a rare neurological disorder with one or two cases per million.
- It started with her delay in speech.
- Later she used to get irritated and cried for no reason followed by unconsciousness that continued for more than 24 hours.
- Previously, the doctors thought of her illness as epilepsy and started anti-convulsive medications that did not help.
- According to pediatric neurologist, Dr. Akbar Mohammad Chettali at Aster Medcity, Liya was brought to emergency in the hospital when she deeply comatose and had a low heart rate and breathing.
- After further investigation it was found out through Polysomnography that she was in deep sleep with poor responsiveness that continued for five days.
- Liya was thereafter provided with medications that consisted of neuroleptics, mood stabilizers and stimulants.
- She responded well to the treatment and has been staying awake and eating well now.
