- In a 13 hour long surgery, the team of doctor's at Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, has implanted a trachea made from parts of the patient's body.
- Due to a road accident in 2015, the patient, Girish suffered polytrauma and was in a critical condition.
- Although he recovered after long term intubation, tracheostomy and ventilatory support, soon after he developed tracheal stenosis.
- He was not able to respire or talk.
- The team of doctors headed by Dr. Sameer Paltewar (neurosurgeon) decided to reconstruct the trachea through staged surgeries.
- In the first two stages of the surgery, the neck was opened so as to measure the size of the trachea.
- Cartilages from both of his ears were taken to create a radial artery forearm flap that was implanted in his forearm.
- Cartilages were further added to add rigidity to the tube made from his forearm skin.
- In the third stage, Girish's neck was reopened and the flap from the forearm was successfully connected to the blood vessels in his neck.
- In the fourth stage a silicon stent was placed in the tube so that it became firm and the patient can breathe properly.
- Girish can talk and breathe without any difficulties and is ready to head back home.
