- A pediatric cardiac transplant was recently performed on a 12-year-old who suffered from breathlessness and was unable to perform her daily activities.
- She was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy with severe left ventricular dysfunction.
- The cardiac condition is not only rare amongst children but also irreversible, compelling the little girl to undergo a heart transplant.
- Dr. Sunil Kumar Swain, pediatric cardiac surgeon at Continental Hospitals, Hyderabad said that an adequate amount of blood was not pumped by the patient's heart that was necessary for circulation in the body.
- He also added that eventually blood clot had also developed in her heart.
- The donor heart belonged to a 14-year-old which was soon transported from Aware Global Hospitals within an hour through a green corridor of 64.3 km.
- Kept under observation post surgery, her condition has been stable.
