Coronary Bypass Surgery
It is a surgery done to redirect blood around a section of a blocked or partially blocked artery in the heart. In this procedure, a healthy blood vessel from your leg, arm, or chest is taken and connected below and above the blocked arteries in the heart. Through this new pathway, blood flows to the heart.
It doesn't cure the heart disease that causes the blockages. It can also ease symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath. This procedure can also improve heart function and reduce the risk of dying of heart disease.
Need of Coronary Bypass Surgery
- Due to severe chest pain that is caused by narrowing of several arteries that supply the heart muscle, leaving the muscle short of blood during light exercise or even at rest.
- One diseased coronary artery and the heart's main pumping chamber isn't functioning well.
- Left main coronary artery supplies most of the blood to the left ventricle is severely narrowed or blocked.
- Suffering from an artery blockage that can't be treated with a procedure that involves temporarily inserting and inflating a tiny balloon to widen the artery.
- A previous angioplasty or placement of a small wire mesh tube that holds the artery open that hasn't been successful.
During the procedure
The surgery takes three to six hours and requires general anesthesia. The number of bypasses required depends on its location and how severe the blockages are.
It is done under general anesthesia where a breathing tube is inserted through the mouth and is attached to a ventilator that breathes for you during and immediately after the surgery.
Coronary bypass surgeries are done through a long incision in the chest and a heart-lung machine keeps blood and oxygen flowing through your body. This is known as on-pump coronary bypass surgery.
The surgeon will cut the center of the chest along the breastbone and spreads open the rib cage to expose the heart. Once the chest is opened the heart is temporarily stopped with medication and a heart-lung machine circulates blood to the body.
Using a section of healthy blood vessel from inside the chest wall or the lower leg, and attaches its ends above and below the blocked artery to redirect the flow to the narrowed part of the diseased artery.
Other surgical techniques are:
- Off-pump or beating-heart surgery
- Minimally invasive surgery
