Valvuloplasty
Also referred as balloon valvuloplasty or balloon valvotomy, this procedure is done to repair a heart valve that has a narrowed opening. Due to narrowed heart valves, the valve flaps become thick or stiff and fuse together. As a result, the blood flow reduces through the valve. With the help of valvuloplasty, the blood flow improves through the heart valve.
Why do you need Valvuloplasty?
You will require valvuloplasty if:
- You are having some symptoms and have severe valve narrowing
- Your mitral valve has narrowed
- Narrowing tricuspid or pulmonary valve
- Narrowing of the aortic valve in you or your child
The Procedure
In a valvuloplasty, a long, thin tube known as a catheter will be inserted into an artery in your arm or groin with a balloon on the tip. For correct placement, X-rays are used to help guide the catheter to the narrowed valve in your heart. The balloon is then inflated by the doctor, which widens the opening of the valve and helps to separate the valve flaps. The catheter and balloon are removed by deflating them. An overnight stay in the hospital is required to keep track of the procedure and avoid post complication.
Although valvuloplasty can improve blood flow through your heart and reduce your symptoms there is a possibility it gets narrow again. You may have to undergo another valvuloplasty or other heart procedure in the future, such as valve repair or replacement.
Take away
