What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical treatment that removes fat from particular regions of the body using a suction method, such as the belly, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, or neck. Liposuction contours (shapes) these regions as well. Lipoplasty and body contouring are other terms for liposuction.
Liposuction isn't usually thought of as a weight-loss strategy or an alternative to dieting. If you're overweight, diet and exercise, as well as bariatric operations like gastric bypass surgery, are more likely to help you lose weight than liposuction.
If you have excess body fat in certain areas but generally maintain a healthy weight, you may be a candidate for liposuction.
Liposuction is often used to treat the following regions of the body:
- Abdomen
- Upper arms
- Buttocks
- Calves and ankles
- Chest and back
- Hips and thighs
- Chin and neck
Additionally, liposuction can be done for breast reduction or gynecomastia therapy.
Fat cells expand in size and volume as you gain weight. Liposuction, as a result, lowers the number of fat cells in a given region. The amount of fat removed is determined by the look of the region as well as the amount of fat present. As long as your weight is steady, the ensuing contour alterations are usually permanent.
The skin adapts to the altered shapes of the treated regions after liposuction. The skin will seem smooth if you have a good skin tone and suppleness. However, if your skin is thin and brittle, the skin in the treated regions may seem loose.
Benefits of liposuction
Liposuction is most commonly performed for aesthetic reasons, but it can also be used to treat specific medical problems.
These are some of them:
- Lymphedema is a chronic (long-term) disease in which excess lymph fluid accumulates in tissues, resulting in oedema (swelling). Oedema most often affects the arms or legs. Swelling, discomfort, and pain can all be reduced by liposuction.
- Gynecomastia is a condition in which fat develops beneath a man's breasts.
- Extreme weight loss after obesity: A morbidly obese individual who loses at least 40% of their BMI may require therapy to remove extra skin and other anomalies.
- Lipodystrophy syndrome is a condition in which fat accumulates in one area of the body while being lost in another. Liposuction can enhance a patient's appearance by distributing body fat more naturally.
- Lipomas: These are benign, fatty tumours.
Liposuction types
There are just a few liposuction procedures to choose from. The use of a small tube called a cannula attached to a vacuum to suck fat from your body is similar to all of them.
- The most frequent method is tumescent liposuction. A sterile solution is injected into the region where the fat is to be removed by your surgeon. It's made up of saline, or saltwater, as well as lidocaine and epinephrine. The solution makes suctioning the fat simpler, with less blood loss and discomfort.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or UAL, uses sound waves to break fat cell walls beneath the skin. This causes the fat to liquefy, allowing it to be suctioned out.
- LAL (Laser-Assisted Lipolysis): This treatment, also known as laser-guided lipo, needs the use of tumescent fluid. It is a less intrusive and bloody process for removing fat than conventional liposuction. To transfer laser energy and heat into the fat beneath the skin, a tiny tube is introduced through a small incision.
Before procedure
Patients will be subjected to a series of health tests before surgery to verify that they are healthy enough to undertake the procedure.
The following suggestions are possible.
- Regular aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery.
- Women may be asked to stop using the contraceptive pill.
- Anaemia patients may be advised to take iron supplements.
- A consent document must be signed by the individual. This demonstrates that they are completely informed about the procedure's risks, advantages, and alternatives.
During the procedure
Some liposuction treatments may only need local or regional anaesthetic, which is an anaesthetic that is only applied to a particular part of your body. Other operations may need general anaesthesia, which renders the patient unconscious for a short period. To help you stay quiet and comfortable, you may be given a sedative through an injection.
Throughout the surgery, your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level will be monitored by the surgical team. Tell your surgeon if you are given a local anaesthetic and have discomfort throughout the operation. The medicine or movements may need to be adjusted.
Depending on the amount of fat removed, the operation might take several hours.
You'll wake up in a recovery room if you've undergone general anaesthesia. Medical professionals will usually keep you at the hospital or clinic for at least a few hours to check your recovery. If you're in the hospital, you may be allowed to stay overnight to ensure you're not dehydrated or in shock due to fluid loss.
After the procedure
Depending on the sort of surgery you underwent, you may not need to stay in the hospital. However, bruising, swelling, and discomfort should be expected for at least a few weeks.
To reduce swelling, your surgeon may ask you to wear a compression garment for 1 to 2 months following surgery.
Antibiotics will very certainly be required to avoid infection. The majority of people may return to work in a few days and resume routine activities in two weeks. However, each individual is unique.
Result
Swelling usually goes away within a few weeks after liposuction. The treated region should now appear less bulky. Expect a slimmer appearance in the treated region within a few months.
Although skin loses rigidity as it ages, the benefits of liposuction are usually long-lasting as long as you maintain your weight. Your fat distribution may vary if you gain weight following liposuction. For example, regardless of what regions were addressed previously, fat may build around your midsection.
Are the Results Long-Term?
During liposuction, fat cells are permanently eliminated. However, you might regain weight by forming new fat cells in various parts of your body.
Follow a diet rich in lean protein, fruits and vegetables, healthy grains, and low-fat dairy to maintain your new form following surgery. Also, exercise regularly.
What Are the Consequences?
Cosmetic surgery is still surgery, and it comes with its own set of dangers. You may assist decrease them by ensuring that the procedure is performed by a board-certified, professionally educated cosmetic surgeon.
There's a chance you'll get the following risks, side effects, or complications:
- Bruising that is severe might continue for several weeks.
- Swelling: It may take up to 6 months for the swelling to subside, and fluid may continue to flow from the wounds.
- Thrombophlebitis is a condition in which a blood clot develops in a vein, resulting in inflammation and other problems.
- Skin burns: The cannula movement may cause friction burns to the skin or nerves.
- Allergic reaction: The patient may be allergic to medicines or surgical materials.
