What Is Colporrhaphy?
Colporrhaphy is a surgical procedure that is done to befit the defects in the wall of a vaginal or pelvic organ prolapse. It includes cystoceles and rectoceles. This procedure is carried out to effectively restore prolapsed organs to their natural and normal position. It also brings relief to symptoms such as urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. A colporrhaphy procedure not only repairs the wall tissue but also strengthens the structure of the vagina to prevent the reoccurrence of prolapse.
Need Of Colporrhaphy
It is required to treat vaginal prolapse. Vaginal prolapse is characterized by bulging of one of the pelvic organs like the uterus, bowel, or bladder into the vagina. Although it is not a life-threatening condition but is likely to affect the quality of life.
The Procedure
It is performed in two ways that using the same technique – the anterior colporrhaphy and the posterior colporrhaphy. General, local or spinal anaesthesia is given to the patient depending on the severity or location of the problem. A speculum is then inserted in the vagina that holds it open. The skin of the fascia is separated from the lesion. The protruding organ gets lifted back into its exact position.
While performing a colporrhaphy procedure the approaches that may be taken to correct the vaginal defect include
- Sutures Support: This is the simplest procedure where sutures are made in the tissue between the vagina and the bladder to get hold of the exact position and strengthen vagina walls.
- Sutures Attachment: Here the sutures are used to attach the vaginal walls to the tissue on the pelvic side.
- Synthetic Material: A synthetic material is inserted between the bladder and the vagina to strengthen the vaginal wall. It gives short-term success and results in higher post-surgical complications.
Conclusion
This procedure requires a stay of 2 to 3 days in the hospital. You might observe vaginal discharge or bleed for a couple of weeks. Until your bowel function resumes you have to be on a liquid diet.
