Hemicolectomy
It is a type of surgery that is done to remove a part of the large intestine called the colon. The colon can be fractionally removed without affecting the way it works in the digestive system. The remaining ends are joined together with no impact on digestion after the affected part is removed. This procedure proves effective when your colon has been affected by a condition or has become cancerous. Some most common conditions that can be treated by a hemicolectomy include:
· inflammatory bowel diseases
· polyps or tissue growths in the colon that can become cancerous
· diverticulitis happen when diverticula in the colon get infected or inflamed
Types
There are two main kinds of hemicolectomies are:
1. Left Hemicolectomy - In this type, the descending colon is removed and the part of the colon that’s attached to the rectum. After its removal, the surgeon will attach the transverse colon directly to the rectum.
2. Right Hemicolectomy – during this type, the colon is removed which is that the part of the colon attached to the tiny intestine. The small intestine is then attached to the transverse colon.
The Procedure
The surgeon will begin by making a few small incisions in your abdominal area to remove the part of the colon. This is also known as laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. Some of the cases require open surgery where the skin and tissue around the colon must be fully opened.
After the incisions, the surgeon is going to remove the affected part of your colon. The parts of your intestines that are directly connected to the part of your colon will be removed. The lymph nodes and blood vessels connected to your colon will also be removed.
After the removal of the colon rest of the colon is reconnected. If ascending colon is removed, the colon towards the end of the small intestine will be connected. If the descending colon is removed, the rest of the colon will be connected to the rectum. This re-joining is referred to as anastomosis.
In case the surgeon is unable to re-join the colon to another part of the digestive tract the colon will be joined to the abdominal skin. This is referred to as stoma and needs a bag to be worn on the abdomen to store waste after the surgery. It’s a temporary solution based on your surgery.
