Intrauterine Insemination
It is a kind of AI procedure for treating infertility. In this process, the sperm that is washed and concentrated are placed directly in the uterus. With time ovary releases one or more eggs to be fertilized. It then results in a normal pregnancy. IUI is planned with the normal cycle or with fertility medications depending on the reasons for infertility.
Preparing For the Procedure
Careful coordination is a must in intrauterine insemination before the actual procedure:
· Preparing the semen sample. Your partner’s semen sample is required at the doctor's office. A vial of frozen donor sperm can also be thawed and prepared. The non-sperm elements present in semen can cause reactions in the woman's body that interfere with fertilization. The sample is washed in such how that separates the highly active, normal sperm from lower-quality sperm.
· Monitoring for ovulation. As the timing of IUI is crucial monitoring signs of ovulation is critical. The same at-home urine ovulation predictor kit is used that detects when the body produces a surge or release of luteinizing hormone. There is another imaging method that lets the doctor visualize the ovaries and egg growth.
· Determining optimal timing. After detecting the ovulation most IUIs are done in a day or two as per your doctor’s plan.
During The Procedure
You will have to lie on an exam table and your legs will be put into stirrups. A speculum are going to be inserted into the vagina. It is similar to what is experienced during a Pap test. The doctor or nurse will:
· Attach a vial that contains a sample of healthy sperm to the end of a long, thin, flexible tube
· Insert the catheter into the vagina from the cervical opening into the uterus
· Push the sperm sample through the tube into the uterus
· Removes the catheter that is followed by the speculum
After The Procedure
You will have to lie on your back for a brief period after the insemination. Post-procedure you can get dressed and go back to normal daily activities. A light spotting will be observed for a day or two after the procedure.
Take Away
Do not be in a hurry to take an at-home pregnancy test. Testing too soon could produce a result that can be false-negative or false-positive. You will have to return about two weeks after your home kit results for a blood test. It is more sensitive in detecting pregnancy hormones after fertilization.
