Cancer arising from the cells of the thyroid gland is known as thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland organ present in the neck behind adam's apple and it produces the thyroid gland and helps in maintaining heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and body weight. It only shows signs of swelling in the neck and pain after it has reached to a higher stage. several types of thyroid cancer are there and their rate of growth has great variation.

Not all thyroid cancer needed treatment immediately, some need to be observed and regularly checked if growing or not. Yes, most of the cases of thyroid cancer can be treated, most common type of thyroid cancer can be cured. For patients who are younger than 50 years of age both types of thyroid cancer papillary and follicular have more than 98% treatment rate.

Yes, maximum cases of thyroid cancer can be cured if they have not been spread to different parts of the body but if due to some reason thyroid cancer cannot be cures then it can be destroyed as much as possible and prevented from growing and spreading to other body parts.

Yes, thyroid cancer can grow quickly and they can even spread into the surrounding tissues. Thyroid cancer is very rare type of cancer which is only seen in around 2% of the thyroid cancer being diagnosed.

Chemotherapy is sometimes helpful in treating most type of cancer but this treatment s not needed in most of the cases of cancer, this treatment is often combined with radiotherapy and sometimes used for advance form of cancer which does not respond to other form of treatment.

Most of the causes of thyroid cancer are not known but there are some risks factor included in thyroid cancer such as family history, radiation exposure and some hereditary syndromes.

Surgery is the main treatment option in almost every case of thyroid cancer expect for anaplastic thyroid cancer. If thyroid is being diagnosed by FNAC then surgery is needed to remove the tumor and remaining part of thyroid gland.

During the Procedure (3 Questions):

Thyroid lobectomy is the surgery which removes the entire lobe of the thyroid cancer along with isthmus. In some cases thyroid lobectomy is also used to diagnose FNAC biopsy result if the proper result has not been made.  The advantage of this surgery is that patient will not need to take hormonal pills after it because the major part of the thyroid gland is left behind it.

Thyroidectomy surgery is done for removing the entire thyroid gland, this is most common surgery for thyroid cancer. In this surgery an incision of few inches long is made across front of neck for removing the entire thyroid gland.

If thyroid cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes then it will be removed at the same time, this is essential for the treatment of medullary thyroid cancer and for anaplastic cancer. In case of papillary and follicular cancer when only one or two enlarged lymph nodes are seen then the enlarged lymph nodes are removed and small cancer cells are treated by radioactive iodine.  

Post the Procedure (5 Questions):

Some of the complications are seen when the surgery is being done by an experienced after thyroid surgery are temporary and permanent hoarness or loss of voice, damage of the parathyroid gland, infection, bleeding and bruises.

Yes, you can live a normal life after thyroid removal. But you have to take medications for preventing hypothyroidism it can be serious. You have to start hormone replacement therapy.

The time duration of being in hospital depends on your recovery. Most of the people usually stay in hospital for one night after surgery, nurses and other staffs will tell you to care for yourself during your recovery from surgery.

You should need to take rest for at least one to two weeks before you can return back to do your normal activities. You should not lift any heavy objects for one to two weeks after the surgery because it will put strain on the neck.

You have to avoid doing strenuous activity and lifting heavy objects for three weeks after surgery till your doctor gives permission. You should not over extend your neck backwards for 2 weeks after surgery, when your incision is drained then you can take shower.
