Medical Conditions that Require Stem Cell Treatment
Some major conditions treated through stem cells are:
Spinal Cord Injury
Eligibility for stem cell treatment
Stem cell treatment can be obtained by patients who have been suffering from such issues and there is no specific improvement in their condition. Thorough medical examination and psychological counselling is carried out to ensure that the patient is ready to undergo the treatment. Various tests will be conducted as per the condition to ensure that the problems faced by the patient are clearly diagnosed. However, there are some conditions which may put the patient in the exclusion category:
Patient’s refusal to give signed informed consent for the procedure
Hemoglobin levels lower than 10
Patients with hereditary blood disorders
Patients with recent surgeries not older than 6 weeks
Breast feeding mothers or pregnant women
Patients with very low immunity
Patients with other infectious diseases
Stem Cell Treatment Procedure
The procedure of stem cell treatment may vary based on the specific disease of the patient but there are three main steps involved in the process:
Source Extraction: In this process the stem cells are obtained from the patient itself or from a matched donor. The stem cells from the patients are extracted mainly from two places:
Bone Marrow Derived Extraction: This is a painless process as the extraction is carried out under local anesthesia and takes around 30-45 minutes. Around 100-120 ml bone marrow is extracted for treatment through this process.
Adipose Tissues Derived Extraction: In this process stem cells are extracted from fat carrying tissues in our body under local anesthesia. It is also a painless process and adipose tissues are extracted for deriving stem cells.
Isolation, analysis, enrichment and activation of the stem cells: The extracted stem cells are thoroughly examined in a class 10,000 clean room and are separated from unwanted mature blood cells, plasma, macrophages and other substances. Thereby they are enriched, concentrated and activated so that they can perform the specified task correctly.
Stem Cell Implantation: The stem cells are mainly administered either intravenously or through intra-cavernous injections.
Number of injections required for the treatment would vary upon the progress of the patient and their response to the treatment. It is a painless procedure and works very fast as compared to other forms of medicine.
After the Procedure
The post-administration of the stem cells the patients are generally allowed to return to their homes the same day. If the stem cells are being transplanted through surgery then the doctors may ask the patients to stay in the hospital for a bit longer. The patients would be required to return for regular follow ups and routine tests to examine the performance of the treatment.
