In Shoulder Arthroscopy, the surgeon evaluates the shoulder region and fixes the tears through small incisions using special devices and instruments. Indications of Shoulder Arthroscopy

This surgery is meant for people who have not had successful physical therapy, medication, or injections. Cases include:

  • A torn rotator cuff
  • A torn or damaged cartilage ring or biceps tendon
  • Shoulder stiffness
  • Removal of inflamed tissue
  • Bone spurs
  • Shoulder instability
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Clavicle arthritis/ arthritis of the collarbone
  • Debridement/drainage of should joint shoulder

  • Physical examination
  • MRI
  • Ultrasound
  • CT Scan
  • EMG (electromyogram)

 

Procedure

Before Procedure

  • Complete physical examination of the affected area
  • Medical history should be provided to the doctor including medications being taken
  • Performing of diagnostic tests
  • Certain medications may be asked to be stopped like blood thinners
  • If you have certain medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, your surgeon may ask you to see your doctors
  • You will be asked to stop smoking as it will affect your wound and recovery
  • You will be asked to fast 8 -12 hours before surgery
  • If you are asked to take any drugs, you should do so with a small sip of water
     

During Procedure

  • If you are healthy, surgery is likely to be performed as an outpatient 
  • Most surgeries take less than an hour but is variable depending on the findings and repair needed
  • You will be given general anaesthesia
  • You may be positioned lying down with arm propped up or in a semi-seated position
  • To expand the surgical site for a good view and repair, sterile fluid is injected into the area
  • A small incision is made, and the arthroscope is inserted
  • Images captured by the arthroscope can be viewed in the monitor nearby
  • Surgical instruments are introduced into the joint to remove and repair the damaged area
  • The instruments are taken out and, incisions are closed either with stitches or small sterile bandages.

 

After Procedure

  • You will be monitored in the operating room for about 1 to 2 hours after surgery before being discharged 
  • It is normal for the shoulder to swell after surgery. A pack of ice may be placed on area 3 – 4 times a day for about 20 minutes to minimize swelling
  • You will experience pain and discomfort for at least a week but, medications will be provided to control the pain
  • You may be asked to wear a sling or an immobilizer to protect your shoulder depending on the repair
  • Your surgeon may request a physical therapist depending on how complex the repair was
  • A rehabilitation plan will be done for you by your surgeon
  • Recovery depends on the type of repair and procedure performed
  • Follow-up should be done a week or so after surgery.

 

Risks and complications

Complications are not common but there are risks involved as in any surgery despite being minor and treatable. Some of them include:

  • Infections
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Damage to blood vessels or nerves
  • Stiffness of shoulder joint
