Ovarian Primary Peritoneal Cancer Treatment in India

Ovarian Primary Peritoneal Cancer Treatment in India

Ovarian Primary Peritoneal Cancer is one of the rarest cancers. This cancer begins in the peritoneal lines and can spread to the other organs in the abdomen. The peritoneum layer is made of epithelial cells and that’s why the symptoms of primary peritoneal cancer are also similar to epithelial cancer. However, it is to be understood clearly that primary peritoneal cancer can still occur if the patient had the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus removed for ovarian cancer.

Diagnosis of Ovarian Primary Peritoneal Cancer

Primary peritoneal cancer is hard to diagnose as the symptoms are not clearly indicative of this particular cancer. Its similarity with epithelial cancer also creates confusion. However, most of the times the cancer is first diagnosed through physical examination by a gynecologist.

  • Physical Examination or the uterus, vagina, stomach, bladder, colon and rectum

  • Ultrasound

  • Transvaginal ultrasound

  • CT Scan

  • MRI

  • Lower GI Series & Upper GI Series

  • Paracentesis

  • CA 125 Blood Test

  • Laparotomy

Primary Peritoneal Cancer is generally divided into 4 stages. Tests help the doctors in determining the actual stage of cancer so that proper treatment can be provided.

  • Stage I: The cancer is present locally and hasn’t spread to other parts

  • Stage II: The cancer has locally advanced meaning it has spread to the nearby regions

  • Stage III: Cancer has spread outside the pelvic region and lymph system

  • Stage IV: The cancer has spread to other organs too like liver, lungs, etc.

Treatment Procedure of Ovarian Primary Peritoneal Cancer

  • Primary Peritoneal Cancer is very similar to epithelial cancer as it is also made up of the same cells. The treatment of this cancer is also similar to epithelial cancer.

  • Usually a mixed approach or surgery along with chemotherapy is followed.

  • Ovaries, Womb, sheet of fatty tissues inside the omentum may be removed as part of the debulking process.

  • Chemotherapy is also administered to restrict the growth of the cancer.

  • Usually the patients are discharged after 3-7 days of the surgery.

  • Radiotherapy is also used to restrict the growth of cancer in advance stages and to reduce the symptoms.

Various factors like the age of the patient, stage of the cancer, physical fitness and others have a very important role in determining the success of the treatment and its effectiveness. With the help of modern medical science the treatment of cancer has become possible to a great extent and even at very advance stages the symptoms can be relieved greatly.

  • Surgery

    • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

    • The hospital stay of few days may be required.

    • Complete recovery may take several weeks.

  • Chemotherapy

    • Chemotherapy plays an important role in restricting the growth of malignant cells and spread of cancer.

    • Chemotherapy is administered through pills or intravenously.

    • The drugs reach the bloodstream and restrict the growth of malignant cells.

    • The drugs can also be injected directly into the area with cancerous growth.

  • Radiotherapy

    • It is used for restricting the growth of malignant cells in the targeted areas.

    • It is given after surgery and chemotherapy.

    • It is used to shrink the spread of cancer cells.

After the procedure

  • The patient will need to stay in the hospital for few days depending upon the condition and stage of the cancer and type of surgery performed.

  • Complete recovery may take few months and may take a bit longer for advance stage patients.

  • Follow up visits and tests will be required at regular intervals to check the growth of the cells or resurgence of cancer.

  • The patient will face some side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy like rapid hair loss, vomiting, weight loss, weakness, etc.

  • With the help of medication these symptoms can be reduced and things can be made easier for the patient.

  • If the symptoms like upset stomach, loss of appetite, abrupt menstrual cycle, fatigue and back pain, rapid weight loss, urinary problems, abdominal pain, bloating, etc. reappear and remain steady for long then the patient must consult the doctor again.
