What is a CRT-D Implant?
An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a microcomputer that is implanted under the skin of the upper chest area. It is small enough to fit in the palm of the hand. It monitors the heart rate and delivers therapy in the form of small electrical pulses.
Helpful: CRT-D implantation
How CRT-D Implant works?
Once implanted an ICD detects the heart rhythm. The device then sends small, undetectable electrical impulses to both the lower chambers of the heart helping them to beat together in a more synchronized pattern. This improves the heart's ability to pump blood and oxygen to the body. The entire procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.
What to Expect Before CRT -D Implant
The process is mostly performed under Local Anaesthesia.CRT devices are mostly implanted just under the skin in the upper chest. Hence, this part of the body is shaved (if needed), scrubbed, and painted with a disinfectant to make it as clean as possible.
What to Expect After CRT -D Implant
After the procedure, the patient may be taken to a recovery room or a hospital room, or may stay in the hospital's intensive-care unit (ICU) or telemetry unit for a day or two so the heart can be carefully monitored. The patient might feel drowsy and some tenderness and soreness at the implant site. If required, this can be managed with pain medication.
CRT -D Implant Recovery
If at any time in the early weeks of the recovery phase, the incision becomes red, hot, more painful, swollen, or begins draining fluid, physician must be notified immediately. These symptoms, including a fever, could signify an infection.
CRT - D Implant Follow-up
A follow-up appointment with the doctor is made 1-2 weeks after the surgery. This appointment is important as it allows the doctor to see the progress in healing and how the device is working.
Patients can resume their normal activities in 2-4 Weeks.
